Stay / Radius Arm / Anti-Tramp Bar

Post by S10NPH » 27 Aug 2014 09:03 pm

I have no definitive name for what I want!

Suffice it to say, I need one of these for my '77 car, as the rubber bushes inside have perished and it squelches when moving off:

I tried to take this bar from a scrap car today, but the nuts were not budging.

From reading a couple of threads here (viewtopic.php?f=54&t=15780 and viewtopic.php?f=13&t=12681&p=155177&hil ... rm#p155177), it looks like something that people often remove to lower cars, so I'm hoping someone has a serviceable one that they don't want.

Thank you!

Classicswede is offering poly bushes now, or you can make a rose joint version.

True, but I doubt the "spartan one" will be having any of that decadence!

Now, amazingly, I wouldn't mind replacement bushes. Even I can see the virtue of modern mechanical components, particularly as they are a direct replacement for the original (and cannot be seen). Maybe I'm getting soft.

Anyway, if I do that, then I must offer up a silly question - how does one get the old ones out, and put the new ones in?

Having said that, whatever a rose tinted version is - i shall not be having that

The axle end is easyish, I cut the edge off and used sockets and a pusher setup. The other end is a press metal fit and you need accurate pushers, I used an old bush shell I had previous cut out by cutting the rubber out and cutting a slot in the shell...actually that is the other way lol. I haven't installed the new ones awaiting a painting oppourtunity, but CS has taken some liberties on design change and its more like the other end now with a wider bobbin H shape, there maybe some minor disadvantage like rubbing on the chassis occasionally.

The bolts do sometimes seize into the steel sleeve inside the bushes. A soak in plus gas and using a impact gun will sometimes free them off. If not the only way to remove one that is totally stuck is to cut down either side of the bush.

Once the arm is off the old bush is easy enough to remove with a vice and a couple of sockets. The new bush will press in by hand end then just use a vice or G clamp to press in the new sleeve.
