any cheap, complete 300 - upto £350 (edit)

Post by CBA » 01 Jun 2015 08:48 pm

Looking for cheap project car with a bit of MOT left to get it home. only 1.4, or Carb 360 - 1.7 not like.

So long as it is complete and it needs no more than £500 of welding I can and will save it if the price is reasoned.

Anywhere mainland UK.

Hi CBA
I've got to disagree with you. Our 340 1.7 with standard Weber conversion has much more grunt than either of the 1.4s we've had in the past.
Good luck with your search.

... But I can see where he's coming from as I feel a bit 1.4-less myself right now. I distinctly remember thinking the engine looked like an upturned saucepan when I got mine and subsequently stayed with it for about 140k miles...

what can a 1.4 rev upto.. I'm sure it can get 8000 if you sneak up on it  ancillaries are tougher by a long-shot on the 1.4 - ie have not 'needed' ancillaries 1.4 ever. I know the 1.7 has a lot of torque low down for what it is.. and it's better on fuel by a margin if you try. But it's just too damn hard to do the tappets and cambelt isn't ideal either for workhorse like this if it's not a Safe engine. and there's a lot of similar but imcompatible cambelt kit parts.

I just want to hit the 1.7 with a hammer, and though the 1.4 never breaks I always fix it.

Had a ratty Mazda 1.5 323 Executive saloon, 1989(not the sports one). Honda bollard/ Aus ford lazer base. Sweet little car, tuned up for extra etc. Drove 100 miles on handbrake in winter. insane amounts of fun. Jap handling - very easy to provoke. DVLA squashed it. now 9 left.

Time to get mrs from work. 1.4 auto... cant be arsed technology. 8)

1.4-ever! Wicked work, man. You should sell slogan's - like Vivian Stanshall did - your earnings would be.... substantial.

Got another clio with leaky exhaust valve. sorted the valve, this is the 3 minute wait during torque sequence on head.
Appears Renault detuned it by making it badly... I;ve improved it a bit. polished the intakes, not ported it.. too much like hard work.

I got the head torqued perfectly but

1. Got plug leads all wrong

2. had flow reversed on injector

3. Even though ive got an identical 1.4 10 feet away.

I think I am quite good with words at times. I know how to put things so there is no confusion. Then again I confuse a lot of people.
Fine line between "Explaining" and "Telling you whats ACTUALLY going on".

As a matter of fact, I write slogans every day, in the form of limericks mainly, or the 'USA TV Voiceover dude', Or the English TV Informative program style. Really heavily taking the mick out of companies who want to sell you things. Satire vs retail.

Thanks for the compliment I'm trying to say.

Haha.

I've had a right ole time with this engine now. Tensioning the timing belt to the renault figures, instead of just nice and snug.. you know.. being perfectionist about it - its finished off the water pump. Its coming out faster than can be put in. So I'm taking the pump, belt and idler off the auto - it just got serviced at 60k and has 62 on it now. I didnt want to put the old girl down but... well. its been crashed twice and had an accident about the windscreen yesterday DO NOT ASK!.
I'll have a shedload of parts at least
2 suspensions, 2 braking systems, another good cylinder head yada yada.

I feel I should fix it straight away, but.. its not procrastination - clio is like a chinese puzzle, my back is in spasm for leaning for 8 hours and my neck is the same, feels like Quincy's neck... My hands are basically two massive scabs. My arms look like I've been chucked in a lion pit and not done "too" badly. Need recovery time. Never buy a renault ever again, but I will completely fix this one and look after it.. see if the "new" cleon fonte can deliver the miles.. 155k has been seen without anything other than reasonable servicing.. so theres a chance it wont be a wasted effort.

How better I would feel if I had a 340. It wouldn't have broke in the first place!

New cambelt, new waterpump, new idler.. 50 miles thrash on motorway. Absolutely perfect. More relieved than anything. 60,000 miles to go. sm34

Piston ring(s) on no3 is broken.

Can you get a piston out the bottom of a renault k7j energy engine by knocking out the gudgeon pin without taking off the crank to change the rings? Or by taking the conrod off at the big end and getting it through the gap? I dont mind needing 3 pairs of hands all under the car to get the re-ringed piston back in the bore, that is possible-- just, will the piston exit the engine this way?
