FM Radio?
FM Radio?
Hi guys,
Having toyed with the idea for a while, I finally took the plunge and bought a 340. I saw it here in fact - a 1989 Blueline in perfect condition, only 30 miles from where I live. I'm pleased with it, but a little scared as I don't really know what I'm doing!
Anyway, I was wondering where I could get my hands on a period Volvo radio, or radio cassette. The only stipulation is that it must have FM! The radio at the moment is a modern addition, and I would like to put it back to how it would have been when new. I'm sure some of you must have one lying around, as most of the cars on here have modern cd players.
Many thanks,
Sion

Thanks kaos and filthyjohn - keep me posted, would you?
Ronnie - that does look good, but I want to actually use an old radio. I have a new S40 for decent sound quality and a CD player!
SteveP - thanks, I'm getting more used to it after driving it a few times.
Figgy - I'll resort to an Australian radio if I don't successfully source one here!

I thing my original radio got thrown. Most of the 300 radios are coded so you will need the code with it

Try doing a "saved search" on Ebay with one of the product codes of the radios in this accessory brochure:

With a bit of patience, something will come up soon, they usually go for rock-bottom prices unless it's something really rare (like antikeradios "dictating machine" thingy)
Try this search for size
volvo (cr*, td*) (radio*, cass*)
even if that one is a little too modern for my taste

I just had a look over in the "offers" section, that car looks immaculate! Great find, I'm sure the excellent overall condition will make up for it not being a MkII ...
Seems the original radio looked like this:

You might want one with a tape player though, at least that way you can connect your mp3 player up without too much hassle ...

Well spotted trabitom99 - the previous owner replaced and misplaced the original radio after taking the pictures. And well spotted that my earlier posting had said I wanted a mk2 (which I still do...)!
Yeah I think it is a good find too. I'm shocked at how old and small it feels. It goes well though, starts easily, though tends to 'kangaroo' a little when slowing down in second gear - is this normal? It also shakes quite a bit when idling. I guess I'm not used to an old car, having had my S40 for three years! I had a 440 1.9TD GS before that, which was a fabulous car, until I sold it to a friend who won an argument with a wall.
But the condition is indeed immaculate. I'm not convinced that the rear screen heater works - how quick are they normally? It did demist eventually tonight, but only after a 10-15 minute journey, which led me to believe that it was just the warm air in the car that did it.
I will do an ebay search as you suggest. The one that comes up at the moment is from an S40 mk1, which as you say is a bit too modern. I'm not that fussed about a tape player, as I have an iTrip.
classicswede - are you sure radios that old would be coded? I don't mind if it's older than my car to get over that issue. Surely one that only has twisty knobs is unlikely to be coded?

might be worth giving the car a little service , points , plugs ,leads , dizzy cap etcS10NPH wrote:tends to 'kangaroo' a little when slowing down in second gear - is this normal? It also shakes quite a bit when idling. I guess I'm not used to an old car,
also check the carb to manifold bolts are tight while your there
lovely car , I really wish I had had the space for it

My shakey engine was cured (well, improved certainly) after finding and fixing a load of vacuum leaks. Hoses gaskets etc round the carb to look at.
