Right... I've got some internet's again.

The above can become a book if you want, there are people on here a lot better gen'd up on it than me. I reckon you are right in a super quick intro rather than going for a huge history however. So, Chris' minor edit would be to:
Attack2001 wrote:First things first when it comes to the 300 series, a little history and the evolution from the beginning. The Volvo 340 was originally designed by DAF. During the development process Volvo bought the DAF factory over interests shown from BMW and continued to source engines from Renault for the platform. So it’s a DAF designed, Volvo built, Renault powered car, at least until later on in the story when Volvo fitted their "redblock" engines to what became the 360.
Input on that would be appreciated.

how complicated do you want it to be?
as for a quick history on the V300, espescially the UK market that's spot on. but it does miss out on quite a lot of facts,
this is (in Dutch) the story of how the V300 series was born
http://volvo300club.nl/berichten.php?co ... u=volvo300
and this is (in Dutch) the short version of the modeldevelopment, and still is far from complete to be 100% exact
http://volvo300club.nl/berichten.php?co ... u=volvo300

i'd leave it as it is wich is a nice introduction without making things too complicated.

as for the MK's, the simplest thing is to call everything with 343 or 345 on the back a MK1. roughly speaking there are 5 different versions of this MK1 and even more changes by half or whole modelyear so it's most sensible to call all those MK1 and divide them by modelyear for the main changes; here's a short example of those changes.
-MY76/77 pushbutton light switches, brown dash; short bumpers, amber gauges
-MY78 short bumpers, black dash with amber gauges
-MY79/80 licence plate is now bolted on the front bumper, new clockset (with green gauges)
-MY81: old nose style, bumpers are extended to the wheel arches
-MY82: mk2 style front, but old dashboard and interior
however, most of the time even that won't do as in detail there's too much that changed in the early years to make a sensible list that is easy for a newbie to follow.

MK2 for when the 340/360 series was introduced in MY83, so was the later style dashboard, new interior etc
MK3 for when the 340/360 got its last mayor facelift at MY86; new bumpers (with indicators in them) fully glued rear windscreen, new taillights etc..

Yup, im not so clued up on the mk1 era, but thats how i've been deviding mk2's and 3's simply by bumper, lights, windows etc.. Mk3's and the majority of Mk2's also have different mirrors the mk1's, although i've seen a few mk2's with mk1 mirrors on and quarter light windows.

Great work!

Might it be worth mentioning the different types of fuel tanks? 360's have a saddle type and 340's a square one where the wheel well is on a 360

Some bolt sizes from the front suspension: (thank's to Mac)

Bottom arm to radius arm and bottom ball joint (3 in total, all the same)
setscrews - M10 x 35mm x 1.5 grade 8.8
Image

Bottom arm to Suspension crossmember (via bush)-

The factory wishbone inner "bolt" is a proper bolt with a 45mm shank

M12 x 80 x 1.75 grade 8.8

Dunno how much detail you wanted but thourght i'd put everything then you can use what you want
'88 360 +T LSD - sold
'87 760 TDI (D24TIC) - sold
'04 V40 D sport (F9Q, decat, Remapped, launch control)
'89 740 SE (b230ft, 12psi, V-cam, headwork, 'remapped', banded steels)
'86 340 DL 1.4

Perfect :D The more info the better. Even if its something like "The boot lock mechanism has a lever that rotates with the key. On mk2's this is 1mm shorter than on mk3's" - Everythings helpful to someone, so we need it all in there :D A book, would be good :P maybe an e-book :P paha. If we ever get it into something decent, i can turn it into a pdf for everyone to download maybe? :) Thomas............

**** Added a link to mr wotsits 340 1.4 turbo and his name escapes me at the moment :) Put in a section for the bolt sizes, i did a search for more, but they werent making complete sense to me what the size was or where they went so i haven't put them in. And i've added an extra picture to the lowering block bit showing them in position. Oh an i've added a link at the very bottom to a reflector plate that goes between the rear lights, you dont understand how long it took me to find that when i couldnt remember what it was called!

So, any more sections? make sure you say, nothings stupid! Need more bolt sizes and where they go - pictures help greatly :D And if anyone knows of any more rare parts to add to the bottom section put them in a post please :) Come on, we need to make this into something big! :D :D :D Thomas................

Me, but I'm generally asleep...

Split the FAQ from the discussion and drop it into V3M howto?

Further additions etc etc can follow the previous method, quote into this thread and someone then makes changes etc?

Yup i was thinking putting it in its own separate thread :) The how to section looks good - If no one else wants to do it, im more than happy to keep going with it and keep updating it as i go :) I've got a lot planned for my car that i will be revealing to all shortly and im sure a lot of it will help contribute to the guide :)
