360 glt head problems what next
gday just got a 1984 360 glt while driving it home the night i bought it stalled on me and wouldnt start anyway long story short got no compression on 1 cylinder dropped valve or pretty severe piston slap on valve from stretching the timing belt i think. anyway just wondering whether to fix the 2.0l or would i be better off getting a new motor with more power and i was gonna get a new motor would it have to be a volvo? what else would fit? i would like to throw in a nissan sr20det just wondering if possible or any tips to make it nice and quick thanks

2.3 or 2.3 turbo from a 700/900 series is a good fit. Theres lots of them about and cheap enough.
recon youd need a Megasquirt managment to go with it though.

Are you sure it's not something simpler? Bad luck if it was the timing belt...
Have you checked the fuel pump fuse in the auxiliary fuse box on the inner wing behind the battery. These have a habbit of corroding up.
SR20DET is a nice engine but not at all easy to fit - why bother when the same gains can be had from an 8v or 16v 2.3 Redblock Volvo turbo with arguabily more reliability. You can use the original sump, oil pump and pickup pipe to get it to physically fit, all bolts up to standard 360 bellhousing. Engine management would need to be custom or from the donor car, Volvo 940 turbo?
1984 though... rare car, sounds nice, got any pics?

its definitely something pretty bad because i took the spark plug out and it had been crushed and shards of metal all over it. i was just thinkin the sr20 because there fairly straight forward and mod parts are pretty common over here in australia not sure about mods for the volvo 2.3 turbo but that should have enough to get a bit sideways heres a pic for you mate

Nice looking car! Ouch, yeah that does sound pretty bad
If you're really keen on the SR20 then check out the showroom section of turbobricks, someone is putting one into his 240 which may give you some pointers. Good thing is the turbo would end up sitting away from the steering column (assume yours is RHD if you're in Aus?) so you'd definitely have more room there.

The belt slipped on my 360 B200K due to corrosion sitting in damp environment, but engine was still ok. Gave a zero compression reading.
Anyway sounds bad, you need to get the head off. not that big a job nor very hard. You might be able to get a replacement from scrap yard. The Engines are normally bomb proof, but the cam belt must be changed at the 80K miles intervals or if very old.
I'm putting a 2.3 Turbo in mine.

With the 2.1 and 2.3 engines you can get away with the cam belt going.
If you are just looking for a little bit of extra poke the a n/a 2.3 from a 240 or 740 will drop in.
For more go then the 2.3 turbo is the way to go. Just with simple basic mods you'll get to the maximum power the drive line will take.
