Dear all:
My VOLVO 340 GL with B17 engine has started to leak oil between the differential and the gearbox.
To fix that leakage, my VOLVO dealer intends to replace two (rotary) shaft seals - VOLVO part no. 3284934.
[Thickness 6 mm; inner diameter 52 mm; outer diameter 70 mm; with an alternating spin]
However, that part is no longer available from VOLVO.
I have contacted Carl Freudenberg GmbH in Weinheim, Germany, which company originally manufactured that part for VOLVO.
However, they seem to have forgotten completely that they manufactured that shaft seal some time ago!
Without new rotary shaft seals, the oil leakage cannot be stopped.
Does anybody have an idea where to get new rotary shaft seals or, alternatively, how to stop the oil leakage?
Thank you in advance for your support to keep my 340 running.
Best regards, Mille

Re: gearbox leaking oil - no shaft seal available
It's a bit early in the morning for me to be getting my head round it, but the Timken catalogues list all US spec Volvos (i.e. not the 3 or the 400), However, p555 of this document
http://www.timken.com/en-in/products/Do ... er7391.pdf
which is pdf p566, shows a 5 speed manual trans which I'm guessing is the 240/740 M47? As to how much is different between that and in 300 use (remember that the big Volvo's mounted the gearbox normally, rather than at the back), but might be worth looking through the oil seal catalogue to see what those part numbers refer to?

Re: gearbox leaking oil - no shaft seal available
Don't know if this helps, but the part you're quoting is number 39 in this diagram:

used in 5 speed versions of 340 and 360 cars. At a guess, number 34 could be the culprit too (collapsible ring, 3296126)
Cheers

Re: gearbox leaking oil - no shaft seal available
those shaft seals only need replacement if gearbox oil is leaking into the diff housing and vice versa!
if the gearbox leaks oil at the diff mounting you need to replace the outer gasket and that's it

Re: gearbox leaking oil - no shaft seal available
Part 34 wont cause the leak, its designed to collapse as you tighten the nut on the pinion shaft to gain the right preload on teh bearings.
All oil seals should be readily availbale from any good bearing shop.

Re: gearbox leaking oil - no shaft seal available
Thank you folks for the hints so far.
The part closest to no. 39 which Timken offers has dimensions of 70 X 52 X 8. The Timken part number is 527008XX.
However, 8 mm is a little bit too thick.
Part no. 39 obviously has an oil hole somewhere which is responsible for the leak.
The outer gasket is allegedly only a paper seal which my VOLVO garage can tailor itself.
Regards, Mille
Supplement: I had gearbox and diff. reassembled last week with the old shaft seals (but a new paper gasket) and the gearbox is now leak-proof. I keep my fingers crossed ...
