steering rack (PAS)

Hi,
I have just bought a 360 GLT (my first!). It has failed its MOT on a few minor things, plus excessive play in the steering rack (n/s). Just wondering if anyone could give me any advice: Is this a common fault? (A friend of mine had a similar problem with an old Suzuki but subsequently found that was how they were designed...) And if the rack needs replacing, where could I find one and is it easy enough to do with the aid of a Haynes manual?
Any advice would be much appreciated!

You can get a recon rack for under £100 if you know where to look...I'll try to find the details. It's not too hard to swap, but you'll probably have diffculty with the bolts that actually hold the rack on.

whereabouts in cardiff are you? i used to live in roath, and can reccomend a good garage if you need one..

Am actually at uni in Oxford at the moment - but would appreciate a friendly garage when I get home - thanks!
Have seen racks on Ebay for 340s and 244s for next to nothing and was kinda hoping that a 360 one would come up sooner or later - but maybe that's wishful thinking. Don't suppose I can use one from a different model..?

I'm certain I saw a 360 steering rack on Ebay last week at some point - although it's highly likely that it wasn't PAS.

I would imagine that you can only use a 360 PAS rack on your car.. as 340s (VERY) rarely came with PAS.

is there actually a difference between a 340 and a 360 rack?

the garage i knew, i cant remember the name.. if you drive down richmond road from albany road, after a while theres a turning to go under the bridge on the right hand side. there is also a road on the left. take the road on the left and the garage is right infront of you on your right-hand side

i can't think of any 360s that are breaking. it might be worth phoning scrapyards in the brighton area - one of them might still have dougle after they stole her

- i dunno if the steering rack was damaged or not though.

is the garage Universal Motors (after research with yell.com and streetmap...)?
Would like to come to the easter meet if I'm free and my new motor is on the road. Did you decide on a date/venue in the end (i got as far as the Lisa/Vicki debate)?

It's not set in stone yet (must be within the week I'd say), but its looking like somewhere around Milton Keynes on the 10th.

Check out the Easter Meet Details thread for more understandable and final details, it'd be good to have you there.

Also, a guy on ebay is selling a 360 interior, with a 360GLE pictured behind it.. may be worth emailing him to ask if you can have the PAS steering rack, as the car is 1989 it'll have it

As long as its not been damaged by the impact the cars had
