finally driving my 340, couple q's

Post by monka »

right, my old car sold on sunday, and finally driving my 340. lol

just a couple q's

how do people find the road noise? i can open and close the window, and if i'm not looking i really cant tell if its closed as there is that much road noise. sounds like a door is open when it isnt. lol.

how much fuel should it be using? i put £10 in on sunday, and just about managed 60 miles,

is it a sunroof model?
try opening the roof half a crank to seal the gap. (check by eye from exterior).
at set fully closed, theres normally a ma-hoosive gap that blows hard above 50mph man.
Also check for split or detiorated door rubbers.

Fuel eccon?
Carb?
theyre not frugal even when running great.
1.4?
or 1.7 man?

If it's a 3 door, check if the rear side window seals are perished... my 5 door 340 is much quieter than my 3 door 360 for this reason. The door seals were already mentioned, if they're non-elastic and let air between it and the door frame, you'll get wind noise.

Woo-hoo!
I got something right.
A scrapper is your best bet.
There a few breaking on here atm. Best put a thread up in WANTED man.
If you COULD get them from volvo, theyd cost about one billion dollars.

Yeah I was about to say door seals... not sure if volvo still do them but easily available from classic car trim manufacturers I would've thought.

Motors... are they just slow? If so take out the motors, run loads of wd40 through them and clean up the mechanisms and theyll be fine

The door seals should be easy, the profile is very close to generally available "classic" seals with no vulcanized corner bits etc. Also the hatch/boot seal seems to be easy to find. (If the door seals are gone, the hatch seal will likely be dead too and leaking water into the boot...) I'm still looking (or a local supplier, Oitracon, is) for the rear side window seals though. That seems a bit more special...

Yes the switches can go aswell with the current, some 740/940 ones work. I'm sure people here have 300 series spares.

if the motors are just slow the gearbox can be a bit siezed and WD40 will fix if you work it loose with mole grips on the outer gear. Should be ok provided the gearbox has no angular play/rock. Also clean up the motor brushes and rub down armature contacts with wet+dry 400-800 paper until bright and shiny.

Wind noise should not be bad but it depends what you are used to, if a door sounds open there probably is a gap. A modern car like a 97 3 series BMW will be much better with rubbers on the outside gaps aswell as the inside ones, more sound insulation etc. Consider holes or plugs missing from the inside steps beside the seat base, these are for access for internal rust-proofing and are often neglected during various work.

MPGwise if you paid £1.07 for your petrol you would have 29.3mpg which isn't a bad average or a 1.7. You might get 35MPG on a 25mile motorway journey taken at 60mph.

There are a lot of companies that if you fax or email a piccy of the cross section with dimensions, they'll send you the closest one. Worth an ask.
