I'm pretty sure it will be from a truck...one way or another. Turbos that size intended for use on cars* are normally waaaay above a student budget (or mine, for that matter!).

* This, in my eyes, generally being horse-crap. Just use a damn lorry turbo!

GT45...yeah, that would explain it. Griz has a GT42, and that's big enough to live in. A GT42 is a 800+hp turbo, so this...

woow, those run with DA12 engine's; my rough guess wasn't far off!

does explain a lot, most DA13's are Holset

Nope.

The GT45 bit means very little, the 94 bit tells more of the story.

That turbo is basically a GT4294 in a large GT45 frame and using a GT45 turbine wheel.
Depending on the exhaust a/r will depend how useable it is, but for the compressor wheel is "just" an 850bhp GT4294 one.

I have a GT4502 here, which is similar sort of thing but the bigger GT4202 compressor wheel.

Im, lucky that mine has a tiny .86 turbine housing, making it no more laggy than the usual GT4202, just a lot bigger externally, but most big diesels have much larger turbine housings than that, making the turbos less usable on a small capacity car...

I am aware of what the second two digits in a Garrett GT model number mean (i.e. which spec within that 'chassis' it is), but I was trying to keep things simple. It's a good idea for Garrett to have been more specific with the GTs....a "T3" could be a massive range of different turbos (both wheels and housings to choose from), whereas at least the choices if you buy, say, a GT3076 are limited to just exhaust housing A/R.

Fair enough, just the way you said this...

Made me think you was saying it would be capable of much more power than a GT42.

And its not, as its just the smaller of the two GT42 compressors.

Just clarifying, as the guy with the GT45 might think he has something on another planet of big, as "real" GT45s are 1100-1200bhp turbos, over 300bhp more than that "GT45" will do :)

I see what you're saying...to take an example more suitable for Adam's application...that the biggest GT28-family turbo is likely to make more power than the smallest GT30, right?

cheers

I dont intend to use the turbo as it is anyway to be honest, i bought it as its in 100% working order and cost £75 to my door and at that price, if i want to change the hot side to make it useable at a later date i can.

To be honest bud, it's huge for that kind of application. I'd sell it to someone building a homebrew jet engine (I actually know someone looking for one...) for twice (or perhaps even a little more) what you paid for it, and put that towards something smaller...like a GT3076R, which seem to make 450bhp or so when bolted to the side of a T5 lump.

What a/r is the turbine housing? Take a look and let me know, may have a solution.

One things for sure, you wont be able to sell it on for much more than you bought it for, I managed to get a brand new 4502 for 195 as pretty much nobody wants anything like that.

If you talking a brand new Garrett GT3076 you talking a grand, screw that, personally id rather try and make most of what you got or trade in for something smaller but simiarly cheap.

Looking at the comp map, it would still be in the compressor map, just about, on a stockish T5 engine, so the compressor is suitable enough, just need to get it to spool...

True, the smaller GTs are spendy, and barely available used. While it's probably what I'd use if I had plenty of money, there's a strong case for sticking with a T-series at half the price (as an off-the-shelf option), or putting something a bit more esoteric together if you're feeling adventurous. My housemate has just bought a Holset, but if that hadn't come up, he was looking at getting a genuine T3/T4 hybrid to replace the eBay-tastic Chinese one he has at the moment.

cheers

Good choice of rims and engine, gets my stamp of approval.
