With anyluck i'm going to be heading to Sweden in the summer aswell. Got two friends who moved out there last year and have been meaning to get out there to see them.

I'm sorry to go off topic, but yes, there still is a ferry. However, it's not a commercial ferry like the one who used to sail from Newcastle, but a cargo ferry. So no bars, just a cafe and cabins. It sails from Immingham to Larvik (a couple of hours south of Oslo). I have not been able to find much info online, but a call to the ferry port in Immingham should sort you out.

You should really come over soon. It's -20C and fantastic weather over here. Lakes are allready frozen, and there are plenty of ice driving opportunities in January and February :)

Also this time of year one can get very good photos when sun stays really low, it is like many hours of sunset or sunrise :D

Of course if you go very up north, then there are no sun, maybe just faint glow, but no sun rises above horizon.
