Where can we find the draft paper, I'd be very supprised if it was passed...
360 to save
I'd like a read of that too... because of these propositions I'll be making sure the 360 is on the road as long as possible, guzzling up petrol and with no catalystMJ wrote:Where can we find the draft paper, I'd be very supprised if it was passed...

79k miles 360, bearing failure
Hello again, I've got more data on the possable cause of the failed bearing, aparrently, the 'cage' in the bearing can rust if the car is left stood for very long periods, which it was when my mom had it, (it had only done 12,000 miles when she gave it to me in 1998), this can cause it to eventually to break up. good news is is that most of those 79,000 miles were done on the moterway, not hundreds of stop-start commutes, so the engine must really be worth saving! I too would be very interested to see the draft paper! What a load of rubbish. How can anyone just stick a figure on cars, regardless of personal value, collectable value, future value or actual condition. Who cares! Many people can not afford to buy and run new cars, however I chose to run my old 360's! As mad as I am I think they are a lot better than newer cars. At least I can work on them with out being ripped of to plug it into a diagnostic unit only to be told it is knackered, then charged for the priviledge! Ok, as someone else asked, how about historic and classic vehicles? I have yet to find more info on this whole scrapyard and breaking of vehicles matter, and then the new info about scrapping 8 year old cars or older, news to me and I must find out more soon! As MJ said, older cars may pollute slightly more than new efficient cars, but to manufacture a new car surely creates even more!

Right chaps...two things...
Firstly, scrapping old cars. What a load of nonsense. For a start roughly 40% of the emissions given out / energy consumed during a car's lifetime is during its manufacture / disposal. Retrofitting of modern engine management systems (ie: ones with oxygen sensors) would be a good step forward too (it ensures there's always a perfect mixture, while 'dumb' EFI is not much more accurate than carbs). The best compromise would be for 'bangers' to be taken off the road, and all cars over a certain age to be registered as 'cared for' / classics.
Education in car care would be useful - a great many cars are scrapped unnecessarily, and many more get cubed because we have lost our specialist garages. Imagine Kwik Fit (where a good proportion of people get ALL their vehicle work done(!!)) trying to tune a carb, or explain to ereg340 that the sensible thing to do is not to pay £££ for a new part on a 18 year old car where a used one would do just fine. Most of the cars I see which are 'beyond economic repair' are actually nothing of the sort.
Secondly...well...there's been some fisticuffs going on hasn't there!
I think it's always worth bearing in mind that this is a public forum, and anyone might come and read what you've posted...even the person you're bitching about. My initial thoughts were that the engine bay was pretty mucky, but the car was generally clean, albeit in need of some TLC - odd wheels, etc. However this is the stuff that bargains are made of...and of course you can't tell much from a few small ebay pictures.
Regarding the rear door rust....they almost all have it, so if you want clean rear doors....good luck! We just don't know what's gone on here (sounds like more than meets the eye), but take it to email if you've got axes to grind chaps. T340 has taken the time to look at the car, and it seems he didn't like what he saw (maybe fairly, maybe unfairly), but whatever the case, there are ways of saying these things in a public arena.
C'mon chaps...this is supposed to be fun
cheers
James

The 79k 360
Hello again all. With the petrol in the tank, the Haynes manual, and the refund you'd get on the tax disk, a buyer would get the car for free, even if it cost them £80 to buy it, if it were scrapped for the engine, the alloys would be worth somthing too, as they're in good condition. Clivey

Car now fitted with solar panel charger.
Car now fitted with solar panel charger. Hi all - have just been over to the car, After weeks of been stood, it didnt start the other day, so I started it this morning on jump leads- it went straight away. Better news is that the battery was pulling a good current from the alternator, so that means it was just flat, not dead. Also I've now fitted a solar panel trickle charger so it won't happen again, I'll include this trickle charger in with the sale of the car, as payment to the new owner, for the fact that the car may need a really good clean, as a result of it been stood under trees. I did spend some time polishing up the interior, which is comming up nice, I'm going to visit the car on my way home from work from now on and continue 'polishing it up', and generally making it nice. It's given ys 20 years of of motoring, and the only time it stopped was that bearing, so it deserves a good send off! Clive

20 years Clive? Unless your fuel saving device can also distort time, I think it'll be 17 years

C'mon, someone buy the car, or at least check it out...don't make me buy it, add the engine to the collection (for Pettaw maybe?), take the drivetrain to fit to Nessy as a temporary measure, then scrap the shell. I can't believe this car deserves cubing, so someone save it!
Has eBay not come good? Have you mentioned the torque tube to the garage as a possibility? It is the famous (only major?) fault in this area, so it'd be downright odd (though possible, as the garage's explanation makes sense) if it's anything else.
cheers

Oops!
I've had 3 300 series cars two belt drives and this one, and I forgot this one was newer then one of the others I was thinking of. Actually, mother bought this car because I had a red one and she was impressed how good it had kept its shine, given it's age at the time, alas I sold it to a girl in work when I was given a company car, the next day she sailed in to the back of a 740 estate and wote it off!! -she was not very popular!!!! Actually my new Prius CVT car, drives very much like the belt drive 300 series, and its won car of the year, must admit, for the 10grand I spent on it, I begin to wonder if I'd been better off with another CVT Volvo!! The amusing thing is how small the 'new' CVT boxes are compared to the 300 series one!

CVT
The new CVT units were developed by the the developnent team that did the origonal DAF/Volvo unit, so it would fit in to a front wheel drive car. As well as three Volvo 300's I also owned two Daf's. The Variomatic lives on! Clivey.

I nearly bought a 66 last year, but decided if a 360 was too slow for me, I'd want to strangle the 66 after a week or so...
