Locating the fuel pump

Post by codeslayer »

I'm currently trying to get an VOLVO 300-B200F running after a 2 year deep-sleep at the backyard. I refilled all fluids like gas, oil and coolant and tried to start the engine several times by using a start-up spray. It seems like the engine would be potentially able to run but finally it doesn't. Now I think that the fuel pump might be broken and doesn't deliver any fueal. After 2 years the whole fuel transport lines might be also dry and the fuel pump might got stuck.

Now I'm trying to locate the fuel pump and looked first under the rear seat cushions. The first thing I found was only the fuel level sensor. Then I moved a little bit towards the rear trunk and found two pipes which obviously belong to the fuel transport system. Anyway I still cant' find the pump.

Can you give me a hint where to find it? Should I remove the plastic cover on the inner side (which covers the filler pipe)?

Another question: When should the fuel pump start operation? Does it only run during the starting and running phase of the engine or should it already run when I just turn on the ignition without starting the engine?

BTW: I already studied the technical-manual (from this site) "v3m_technical_B19-B200.pdf" on page 113 of the document and will "check the fuel pump delivery" as described.

The fuel pump is underneath the car, at the back near the fuel tank. Try and spot the small plastic fuel filter - the pump isn't far off from that. Also check the relay near the battery, if that's wobbly, nothing works. It's easily knocked out of place when fitting a new battery in.

Cheers

Tom

fuel pump will only run on the startup and running phases of the engine, it will not run with ignition on only. Firstly check that relay that Trabitom has suggested, and then check the auxiliary fuse box behind the battery, there is a little black box with two fuses inside and I think its the bottom one that is the fuel pump. Often all that's needed is a quick spray of contact/electricall cleaner and a bit of rotation in the socket and its good to go.

You should be able to hear the fuel pump whirring when you crank the motor over. Listen out for it.
