Steering Rack

Post by peach_room_tom »

Hi

Last week my E reg 1.7 340 saloon falied its MOT on the steering rack. Ive been looking around trying to locate one at a fairly cheap price but im not sure if it has the 18mm or the 20mm pinion. Does anybody know how to tell which one it has without taking it off?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Kind regards

Tom

As far as I am aware the differences are between PAS and non PAS, however I don't know which would be which. Someone must know. It depends upon what is wrong as to whether it actually needs a replacement. I know on one 300 that he worked on, my Volvo mechanic knew the exact problem that they suffer from and was able to redeem the one already fitted. It had been issued with a do not drive MOT failure, but he repaired the steering rack. May be worth looking into.

As far as I am aware it involved some welding, though I'm not sure if some parts were replaced as well. I may see him soon to ask.

What part failed on the rack, does it say on the fail sheet? Offside or Nearside?
