I have just bought a 360 (the white one on ebay), unfortunatly it needs a replacement gearbox. I am going to have a go at this myself. As a novice I would be greatful of any advise on the task in hand. It looks fairly straight forward in my haynes manual!
Aha! Would this be Clive's famous 360 with the electronic MPG device??!
Take a good long hard look at it...I'm convinced that the gearbox itself is at fault. The M47 is not famous for failing, whereas the torque tube (prop shaft) IS....and Clive has revealed that the loud sound generated is the infamous 'hammer action drill' sound, which is characteristic of a TT failure.
Of course it could well be the box, and Clive's garageman came up with a convincing explanation of what would have failed....but a word of warning - don't go blowing your dosh on a new box before checking the torque tube first!
James,
Thanks for your advise! How can I determine if the TT is at fault (would I need to remove it to check properly?. My first 300 had the prop shaft fail, the splines ground off and I lost drive. Would I be right in assuming that the symptons would be the same.
Decided against attempting the repair myself, anyway it turned out to be the final drive at fault ( afault with the diff!). A Replacment gearbox and final drive unit was required. My next task will be to tidy up the bodywork etc.
The engine is definatly the best bit about the car and th interior isn't to bad either (now I've started cleaning it). There is quite a bit of work to do to get the bodywork upto standard, but I think it will be worth it! Apart from the condition this is the best 300 series I have owned (3 previous to this, 340 1.4 DL, 340 1.7 GLE and 360 GLT `85).
With regard to MK, I would like to get down there (Only issues would be the distance and getting the bread nife to join me).
