I honestly couldn't think what your avatar was from for absolutely ages, but knew I'd seen it before. Then it suddenly came back to me this morning.JPB wrote:39, I had the right tyres on it remember!

Re: 1988 Vari-Ho - Stranded Fail *18.07.10*
Went to a bus meet in Whitley bay today.
(pics uploading for those who enjoy Bus-porn)
Came back to the car, dead.
Nothing.
Luckilly, I had Filthyjohn with me.
Many checks, swear words and compaints about the rain later, the starter motor was out.
One hammer, screwdriver and refitting later and the car burst back into life.
Starter motor isnt engaging reliably. Needed to be seriously freed off, soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.
Does anyone have a spare tested working B14 starter that I can swap for money?
Cheers all.

Dude, I assume you just tried tapping the solenoid when attempting to turn the engine over?
If it's not the end of the world to remove it, I would and clean it. I reckon that will sort it. My mate done that to his Mondeo TDi and it was fine aftwerwards.

Tried everything before resorting to removal.
Being a vario, couldnt rock it or bump start it.
CVT fail.
Not really confident enough to dismantle and clean the SM myself like.
Might be able to manage a straight change over though.
Possibly.

I actually think this is fairly common on 1.4's. My Dad carried a hammer for a short while before replacing the starter on his too

+1 to fairly common (Bosch (360) beats Paris-Rhone (340))SteveP wrote:I actually think this is fairly common on 1.4's. My Dad carried a hammer for a short while before replacing the starter on his too

+1 to the umbrella
Drove around for about 6 months without a starter in our old 343 Junior in pre-Ebay and pre-forum days. But that's not an option in a vario ...
