Diffrence between 1.4 cvt and manual?

Post by Gordon F »

Quick question. has anyone fitted a cvt engine to a manual? its a 1989 b14.4e thats in the car just now was just wondering if its a simple case of swap the flywheel/clutch over or if theres more parts required. Cheers.

Engine is the same engine dude. Only the drivetrains differ.
It's a lot of work to convert from rubberbelts to a traditional manual gearbox, but possible.

Hth.

Seeing as nobody has said anything yet, I'm gonna say that you should only need to swap the flywheel/clutch on the engine. There are some vacuum hoses that will be left redundant which is the bit I'm not sure about, I don't want to just say to blank them off...

(Engine from 1.4CVT going into a 1.4 manual car.)

The only things I can see in the green books is that the flywheel and everything behind has to come off the AT (auto transmission) engine and the manual equivalents put on. The other thing mentioned in the manual is the front engine mountings have some thick washers on the MT (manual transmission) engines.

Other than that I don't foresee any problems.

What I would do is to do a compression check on the engine. Then I'd plonk it in. I'd adjust the valve clearances while I'm at it and compare the carb specs / inlet manifold closely. There may or may not be an extra vacuum take off on the carb or manifold baseplate to assist functioning of the AT, but I've never looked at them back-to-back, so I could be talking cobblers here sm6

Filthyjohn might know something as he converted a 1.4CVT car to manual, which is somewhat a bit more involved than plonking an engine from a AT car into a MT. (thread HERE)

the washers are only on the 340 MT's before MY85 wich have the upright engine mounts, last 300 wich had this is chassisno 910265. with intruduction of the D16 all 340's got the engine mounts on an angle and the washers weren't needed anymore.

more times than i would've wanted too actually

may i ask if the CVT and MT engines have the same engine code (B14.4E?? or something else), you can find the badge just above the oil filter.

parts to swap:
- flywheel
- clutch
- complete bellhousing + bolts.

the flywheel guard plate wich bolts to the bellhousing can be kept, you can also reuse the flywheelbolts, clean the threads with a wire brush before you insert them, the flywheel itself will bolt straight on but there's only one way to fit it.

if the CVT clutchplate looks good with all the cooling slots still present, you may want to sell the complete package to a CVT enthousiast, as new clutches are rather expensive.

I was hoping of the return of those items given the bargain basement price I'm letting this go for! ;)
