Sump washer?

Post by broady81 »

Hey guys,

I'm doing a complete oil change in my 340, replacing all 5Ls and putting in a new oil filter. I have heard that it's a good idea to change the washer on the sump while I'm at it. Does anybody know what type it is or the dimensions? I had a look on eBay, but all the Volvo specific washers state not suitable for the 300 series, presumably because it has a Reanult engine. Would a Renault washer be suitable?

Thanks

Pain in the arse to get hold of, got mine from a local garage. Hellfrauds do sets but I'm not sure if they will fit. For the past 6 oil changes I've just re-used the copper washer

You technically should change the sump washer at every service as it's a consumable part. I have reused them before but wouldn't do it more than twice as they loose their seal when compressed too much.

For mine i went to Renault and they gave me one for free, the guy even pointed out it was fitted with the incorrect copper washer as the F7R sump is alloy and the two don't mix. I'd just take the old washer around a few autofactors i bet they can find you a match easily enough :) .

The parts website http://www.daparto.de spits out following dimensions for a 340 1.7 sump washer:

16mm inner diameter
22mm outer diameter
2mm thickness

Elring 813052
Reinz 417203230

Hope that's of some help!

Cheers

I got tired of always sourcing different size washers for gearbox, sump, diff etc.. when changing oils so I bought few copper washer assortments.

You could always re-anneal the old copper washer to make it soft again. Heat it to a dull red, then drop it into cold water. It will soften if you just let it air cool, but quenching is better.

This will work a couple of times but after that it's then best to source some new ones.

I stopped replacing them years ago, never had a problem with leaks. The trick is not to over tighten it and wreck it, bloody hard to remove if you overtighten anyway.

I know that for the 1.4 the seal washer has a 20 mm inside diameter, it's also the same washer for the CVT oil bolts

In that case be careful with what I said earlier for the 1.7 sump washer. The same parts website quotes

18mm inner diameter
24mm outer diameter
1.5mm thickness

for the 1.4 washer. I've got no proof that's correct ...

I'll dig around a catalogue later if I can find it (all my PDF cats are at home)

Anything the right size and not over-tightened will do the job though. Something tells me that rather than being a solid copper washer, it's a slightly rounded cross-section and hollow crushable thing?

Not all are, and I can't remember off hand which one is. Certainly either the 1.7 or the Redblock does have a crush washer.

When I had the sump plug out the other day, the washer on my 1.7 was definitely not a crush washer. Unfortunately I didn't measure it as I decided in my wisdom not to replace it :)

Thanks for the help anyway guys :D
