Fuel pump failing?? Help Pl-l-l-l-l-ease

Post by CBA »

Car is running perfectly until I try to put my foot down, then it bogs down until I let off, then gradually comes back, if I drive gently for half a mile I can floor it through 1 or 2 gears then it runs out of power - at this time if I put the clutch in the engine stops. so zero fuel in the carb.
Run wires trough all the fuel lines, checked the tank transmitter, checked the big fuel filter and the inline filter and the filter in the carburettor itself, all perfectly clean.. logical deduction tells me its the pump.

1: anyone have a pump suitable for a B172?
2: What other pumps fit the flange?
3; I suppose its ok to use any old scrapper pump thats electric? Landrover/MG?
4: any other cars this engine was used in that would have a suitable pump?
5: any other cars that use the same or damn near pump?

Could be the pump. Could also just need a new fuel filter?

i'd do a pressure test on the feed hose first.

it could also be a buildup of vacuum in the fuel-tank. check the breatherline or try it again with the filler cap off (preferredly on a closed road, out of the sun and without a fire around offcourse  )

Could also be float height in the carb I'd have thought?

Electric pumps, be careful, don't use any thing with an SU/Strom, they require 1.5psi rather than weber/solex which need... erm.... 6ish I seem to remember.

There are 2 diff setups on a 1.7, check to see if you need a 2 or 3 outlet pump. Engine can be found in R5, 19, 21, 25 and FI varients in Meganes and V 400s

thanks for the info it will be useful, alas not right now since it appears to have fixed itself.
might have been tank vacuum since it fixed itself after I ran out of gas, on refilling I managed a fairly rapid quarter mile. probably dislodged whatever was clogging the vent or maybe the pump was sorted by running dry. who knows?
YAY!
