Clutch change?

Post by JordanL » 08 May 2011 02:46 pm

Attempting to change a clutch on a 1400 340, 1987 manual.

Can it be done without changing the engine? Read a few things and tried searching but not found many definate answers?

If it can be done does anybody have info/instructions on how to go about it.

Thanks

jup,

can be done with the car on axle stands, but on a bridge is more conveniant

from the top; remove airfilter housing, starter motor, TDC sensor on the bellhousing, heatshield near the downpipe on the rh rear engine mount, and the 4 big M10 bolts that hold the bellhousing(leave the bellhousing attached!)
get the car on the bridge and unbolt the flywheel protection shield, release the clutch cable by undoing the 2 nuts, support the engine and remove the rear engine mounts, beware that your tool is secured properly and deep enough into these 6 allen key bolts before you remove them! (tap the tool in the allen key with a hammer or sth first) now remove the RHS rear engine mount from the bellhousing and tap the bellhousing loose

do the clutchchange and fitting everything back speaks to itself. it's easyest to do the pedal adjustment at the latest with everything bolted back under it.

Thanks a lot, I guess the prop needs removing as well?

Prop yes, and removal of front exhaust section makes it easier. If you undue the clutch hex bolts first, just loosen them don't take them all the way out, through the inspection hole in the bellhouse before removing the bellhousing it save trying to lock off the flywheel through the starter opening. Allen key type socket bit on socket wrench with short extension will then lock on inspection hole and allow you to loosen the clutch and you can turn the prop from under the car while you are there and still see when the next bolt comes in to view.

Try and use half inch drive socket wrench and get the half inch drive type socket with 6mm hex bit as can also be used on the rear engine mountings hex bolts, anything smaller then the half inch drive socket will be a struggle if using on rear engine mounts as the hex bolts can be seized in a bit and smaller wrenches snap or break (know from experience).
