as the thread title says, im pretty sure you cant fit the 1.4 beam to a 1.7 but worth finding out for sure - can anyone shed some light on this for me?

yes, but only from certain models.
early B14 had 2 upright front engine mounts-these don't fit. at modelyear 85 with the introduction of the 1.6Diesel the front engine mount changed to accomodate this 1.6L renault F-series engine, B14's got a relocating bracket to place the 2 engine mounts under a 45degree angle.

Like Anjo said. Depending on the age of the car, yes. Just need the 2 rubber front mounts from the 1.7 engine.
I had to swap the beam on mine, as mine was an early MK2 version. Theres a pic of the difference in my how to guide (which I still need to finish)
The later 1.7 beam bolted directly to the 1.4 chassis mounting points though.

all sorted swapped them round all fits just the 1.7 beam has extra 2 brackets for more strength i guess
