Can anybody explain to me...

Post by Duvel78 »

the system in UK for the plate number...

I often hear on this forum words like "E-reg" or "F-reg", "G-reg"...

Is it the year when the car was produced? I want a list!

Another question: the plate number stays on the car during the whole life of this, even when it's sold? Because here we keep the plate number when we buy another car...

The letter denotes the age of the car.

For instance, 'F' is around the 1988/89 period..D is about 1986..it is a tad tricky to explain.

tto answer your other question , the plate stays with the car in the uk , you can transfer a plate if it has a special meaning to you and there are specialist dealers . it costs £25.00 to hold a plate on retention per year (ie not assigned to a vehicle )and £80 to transfer it onto a new car .
Skys corsa is an sreg which is 1998 but his plate reads B 6 CJN His grandmother bought this because his initials are C J N
and before you all start no she didnt buy me F 34 SAD , it came with the car LOL
A lot of people here buy Irish plates because they are cheaper and random (three numbers / four letters ) to disguise the age of there car now thats what I call sad

We have also 3 letters and 3 numbers. Nowadays new cars get random letters and numbers but before -99 every county had their own letter so it indicated in which county was the car registered in. Plates are also permanent so if the owner changes plates won't.

We have the same, on the old system the last 2 of the 3 letters explained which registration area the car was registered. On the new system, the first two letters explain it

ie A123 AXX or XX12 ABC

Where XX is the location mark. Location codes themselves also changed when the new system was brought in.

Edit: http://www.kingkong.demon.co.uk/where/gb.htm

The top codes show the new codes (and are actually organised ;) ) and the ones further down are the old ones (that we all are, and unorganised!!)
