Mac needs bits
Mac needs bits
Afternoon all,
For some time now I have been trying to help provide information for a project involving
fitting a 360 transmission in a Mini. The "perpetrator" is also planning to engineer a
"gripper" type LSD that can be fitted (and of course would be suitable for 300s as well).
A 360 diff in case is now required for mock up etc. (I only have a 4spd.340 out of case)
Has anybody, please, got a 360 diff lying around that they could donate to the cause ???
Oh - and I need a LH 2.2 fuel pump for a '90' 740 B200E.

Re: Mac needs bits
Any 5 speed case would do the job, no? Sadly I don't have one!
There's something funny going on with that 740....a B200E in a 740 would run K-Jet....or if it's EFI, it'd be a B200F running LH2.4. I think they use near enough the same pump though. I'm pretty sure any RWD EFI pump would work, actually...even a 360 GLT one.
cheers
James

Re: Mac needs bits
Just seen this, i dont mind lending mine although i will want it back but i could do with a decent lsd for mine
Re: Mac needs bits
James - senior moment - it is, of course, B200F LH 2.4.
Sammy - many thanks for the offer but I'm looking for one to be hacked about etc.

Re: Mac needs bits
I believe that 760 V6s have the same pump, too, Mac. In other words, I wouldn't be too fussy about exactly what you get. I know I've got one...but not sure if I have a spare...

Re: Mac needs bits
Yep, same pump for all 7/900's.
Terms and conditions apply. This post may go down as well as up. Regulated by the Financial Services Authority. Hard hats to be worn. No reversing without a banksman. No admittance to unauthorized persons. Stop that. Put that down. Leave that alone.
Re: Mac needs bits
I may well have one lurking about rusting quietly away somewhere. How quickly do you need it Mac?

Re: Mac needs bits
It would be a diff Mac. Quickly might be a bit difficult though.
Re: Mac needs bits
Hi Mac,
I got one now.
When I get one made, I will let you know how to make it.
Also, I think I need 2 gaskets for flanges where drive shaft goes in.
Do you have them?
Cheers

Re: Mac needs bits
Hi Atchi, so glad you've found a diff.
Not sure which gaskets you need,
Drive flanges are splined into the diff and pass through an oil seal, the seal carrier fits to the diff case on shims which control the c/w and pinion mesh
(by moving diff sideways within the case) and is sealed by a simple 'o' ring. The driveshaft fits to the flange with a shaped rubber gasket which are currently "unavailable"
The oil seal will carry a code which should allow a good bearing supplier to match it.
Best regards - Mac.

Re: Mac needs bits
Hi Mac,
I got it delivered today.
I was expecting only diff but my friend sold me complete unit as in back end of a gearbox ready to fit.
Do you think I can cut spline shaft by 3mm so that I can sank flange nut deeper and weld it for smooth surface?
What I mean is that if I make a Phantom Grip LSD copy, I will need flat surface to work with gap!
Well, here is the link.
http://www.phantomgrip.com/
Due to small space between spider gears(sun gears), I have to do a lot of machining.
I'm thinking of going one better than original PG and fit motor bike clutch plates to the surface.
This way, I will have more friction than metal to metal and by product will be no metal bits in diff case.
Tell me what you think.
Cheers

Re: Mac needs bits
Hi Atchi,
In practical terms it should present no problem shortening the drive flange shafts by 3mm allowing you to "sink" the retaining nut by cutting into the gear but I would just note a degree of caution.
The length of "full depth" spline available is 20mm so a reduction of 3mm equates to a reduction of 15%. The reliable torque handling capability will be reduced - I don't know what power/torque or
torque "rise" (rate at which torque will rise) you intend to run but you may run into spline strip conditions. (I've never known this to happen even with redblock turbo power so you should be ok)
I think bike clutch material (or autobox clutch) would be a verrry good idea - it should solve the "phantom" problems of metal filings contamination.
Saw your thread about propshafts - I think using a 340 prop is a no go - the alloy tube/bonded rubber coupling will take a surprising amount of power but the slightest flex due to misalignment will
cause the bonded joint to fail and spin in the tube. The 360 torque tube is a much more elegant solution and should present no engineering problems to shorten. (and is much stronger).
All the best - Mac.

Re: Mac needs bits
Hi Mac,
Thank you very much for your input.
I did find out that prop shaft is somewhat different beteen 340 and 360.
Am I right thinking that propshaft bearingx3 in torque tube is just pressed in?
I think I can shorten fron section and middle by moving bearing and re weld flange whci connect to bell housing will do the trick... I think.
I will be using a Swift Gti flywheel and clutch as I have a heavy duty pressure plate.
So this mean I will be cutting inpout shaft from FWD gearbox and weld it to a shortened 360 propshaft.
I hope it make sense!
Cheers
