Re: S.O.S. - rear light clusters needed! - Mission accomplis

Post by S10NPH » 29 Sep 2011 05:58 pm

Thanks to everyone for their replies and offers, especially MCHUDD and VND.

I've spoken to Nick who's surprised and delighted that there's a gang of people out there with love and parts for his old car! Unfortunately, he's having to fight with the insurance company not to write it off, but I will keep you posted as to progress with the repairs.

Thanks,

Siôn

Och, what's the biggy with a cat D or cat C for a keeper? As long as you can keep the car and keep it on the road. Anything past a broken light is a cat D on an oldie, so it'll be a struggle not to get a beyond economic repair. Or am I missing owt?

If they really insist that they have to take it away, I don't mind stealing it and hiding it for a few weeks until it all blows over

They have to give you the option the buy it back I believe. I did with my previous transit which was written off in quite a messy accident wing, door AND door post totally crushed (not my fault thankfully).

I bought it back off them and got it fixed up properly and still made a profit on the deal :P

Encourage them not be put off by some pushy sod on the end of a phone.

I've offered to assist with a valuation. They may be under the impression that it's still worth £200...whereas I bought an almost identical car in what was essentially non-running condition, as well as needing various things doing...and paid £300 for it last year...

I do agree on the cat D, though (and it won't be a cat C unless it's much more extreme than it sounds)...annoying, but not the end of the world, especially if evidence of a professional repair is kept.

I have two light clusters and a rear bumper in the back of the 343, ready for a hand-over at Beaulieu. Happy days :)

cheers

This post is a slight continuation of my Volvo 300 National Meeting post, but I thought I'd update you all in relation to this mk1. Foggy supplied me with some rear lights and a bumper whilst at Beaulieu, and we went straight to deliver the goodies to the waiting owners on the way back (after swapping to my 345 to make the journey so they could see it).

Here is a picture of the damage. As Hell Driver and I were speculating on Sunday, it isn't actually that bad, and is concentrated on the number plate panel. It has bent enough to force the boot shut at the moment. I'm told that it caused £3,500 worth of damage to the Mercedes that hit it, which makes me quite proud!!

They are taking it to the garage tomorrow for the repairs to be done, and hopefully the car will be as good as (sort-of) new! Nick and Sallyann are very grateful, and I'm really glad we could help them out. I've asked them to keep me posted, and to send a picture of the repaired car.

I thought I'd share a few more pictures I took of the car pre-accident, just to brighten all our hearts up. It's wonderful to see two mk1s together!

Hi mate.
What a cracking set of pictures.
To have two cars like that in the same carpark after 30 odd years is quiet something.
If any of his family are on a computer, he should hook up with V3M.
Good luck in getting it fived.
Cheers Mark.

Thanks Mark, yes it's quite a sight! I wasn't meant to be in that car park, but I was very quick.

I have actually sent them a link to this thread!

Hi mate
I haven't seen another like mine over here in many a long year.
I hope V3M will give them the drive to carry on and not give up on the motor.
Cheers Mark.

It was a pleasure to be of service! Excellent to see the pics of the two cars together. Here's one I took earlier in the summer of two of my mk1s...(must try to get all three together before I sell the 345!)...

Given what I said in my previous post, you best keep as far away from that Mercedes as possible!! :-)

Haha...I'll keep rolling out pics every few months to keep you on the hook sm56 If I'm honest...part of me wants to sell the silver 343 and keep the 345 as it just has so much charm...although the silver 343 being that little bit older has a few more "mk1" features, like the older style badges, older fusebox, etc. Both the blue mk1s are mostly mk2s in the "details".

cheers

The damage to the green car doesn't look too bad, the left light was missing a reverse lens anyway! At least any damage to panels is behind bumper/number plate so when it's pulled out it might not be that noticeable if it's repaired and resprayed well. At least the rear panels line up with the boot-lid still.
