Power steering on a 340DL

Post by galles »

Hallo everybody, I have a `87 340DL with 1,7liter engine. My question is: Is possible to install a power stering rack (from a 360) on this car?.
Thanks in advance.

The steering is managable and no pas makes the car nicer to drive fast around bends :)

hi i am in the process of fitting a power steering rack to a 1.7
firstly you will need a 360 power rack and lower steering column
you will need a power steering pump from a 440
the power rack fits onto the cross member using the origonal holes
the problem part is there is not enough clearance for the rack to sit in between the engine and bell housing
to over come this the engine mounts need to be altered
the engine has to be raised about 20mm
i have had spacers made that go between the engine mounting brackets and the cross member at the rear
also space the front mountings the same way
next!!!... you may have to modify the lower part of the bell housing so that the pipe coming out of the rack does not foul
have a go just think of that lovely light steering for a weekends work...and not a huge cost
good luck

just to add you will also need a 440 front crank pulley and alternator pulley and of course a different belt....just find a 440 with power steering an take what you need
good luck

You also need a different exhaust downpipe, one that'll clear the steering column.

My car is left hand drive, so I think there's no matter wiht exhaust system.
I already have a power steering rack, the lower steering axle and the power steering pump with brackets and hoses from a 360( left hand drive). The bracket of 360's steering pump looks like my alternator's bracket and should fit. So my problem now is: Where is the new altenator position?

on the right hand drive...and with the b172 engine the power steering pump bolts directly onto the engine block....the holes are already there.
the alternator stays in the same position

power steering

Post by brad360 »

I'm in australia with a 1986 360GLT without power steering.

A 1988 2-litre 360 GLE with PS is being wrecked in NZ.

My question:

What are the essential 360-specific bits and pieces that I would need?

What do you think they would weigh? (For freight costs)

Are they readily available in UK or elsewhere?

I guess some parts could come from a 240 or something with a similar engine, I could get them locally if the freight from NZ is too high.

A Volvo mechanic told me he had only ever seen one 360 with PS, they stopped selling here in 1987.

hi the parts you would need are a power rack and possibly the lower column....also the pump, hoses, and resorvior.
the pump of off a 240 or even a 740 would bolt on and maybe work
i have a second hand 360 power rack if you cant find one
good luck
