360 Transmission noise at idle

Post by andyb360 »

Hi Foks,

Help needed please - i'm still very much a 300 novice!

I bought 'Vera' - a 1986 360GLT from 'Mattiewhatsit' in November of last year. All is going reasonably well and i've done a few jobs and she's passed an MOT - great.

BUT... arrived home tonight and after I parked on the drive there was a loudish noise coming from the transmission - from the rear of the car - with the engine at idle. Put my foot on the clutch and it stopped.

If it's clutch related why is it coming from the gearbox area? Don't understand!

Anyone got any advice or bright ideas please.

Many thanks,

Andy.

its along shot but my exhaust used to band on the spare wheel well at idle but with some revs the noise stopped, i guess the frequency of the vibrations were too high. 360 backbox are difficult to get to sit properly so worth looking to see if its resting on the spare wheel well.

Hi 'Evo'
and thanks for the thoughts. I'll see if I can get the car on a ramp during the week and have a look-see.
BUT
i'm pretty convinced it's got something to do with prop shaft or transmission.
Thanks again,
Andy.

the 360's torque tube is quite a heavy duty peice of kit, doubt you'd find problems there. probably as sven said, where the noise comes from can be very deceptive, specially if you're sat in the driver's seat pressing the clutch pedal.

Lovely car you've got, Seen it a fair few times when Matt had it, nice to see it's gone to a good home :)

Guys,

Thanks for your comments. What and where are the idler gears?

Car is driving fine, smooth gearchanges and no noises - just the odd occasion when idling.

I will get underneath!

Cheers,

Andy.

The idler shaft will be within the box,the rest of the car will break before they cause a problem.

Do a fluid change if you're bothered but they will be fine just a trait of 360s it would appear.

Hi Sven

What's all this about the rest of the car breaking? Mattie told me that Captain Scarlet would break before a 360!

OK - i'll just stop worrying. I've already done a gearbox oil change - must have been the Mazola I used!

Grumbling suspension on the drivers side today - diagnosed as drop link wear. I've ordered a new pair off Ebay at £3.81 each!!! Can they be any good?

Thanks again,

Andy.
