Hmm, I don't know what to say, you have achieved new level of oeh noes, having french car AND having NA diesel in same package must be something totally horrible, but still so cheap to run that one will never find any reasonable way that would hold against cheapness to get rid of it.

I have driven a Nissan and a corolla, NA diesels, both some 80's models and oh boy was those slow, that pug of yours must be lot faster that them, but it still should be really slow. It goes fine when one gets it up to speed, same with my 240, but to gain speed you need a passing lorry which tow hook attaches to pug accidently, tail wind of typhoon class or free fall level cliff.

Looks a good buy, also you clearly have linseed touch

Put side exhaust on it, chromed pipe that runs from front mudflap to near rear tire, well even black works too

Its not THAT slow really dude. Pretty punchy off the line. Enough to explode out of junctions or onto busy roundabouts safely.
It wont win any drag races, but does pull well enough for me. Normally makes it to 60 by the time I get to the end of a sliproad when joining a motorway.

Like a Jumbo jet taking off on a short runway...... "come on, come on, just a little more speeeeed"

I'm pretty sure that in our realities definition of explosion must differ a bit

It is light car, that helps, put construction equipment to back so that total weight comes close to 1600kg and it will be sluggish for sure.

With 240 and bit of cargo (usually had boot topped to lid), every hill meant flooring it and quite many hills did require 4th gear instead of 5th.

Nissan and Corolla, those did rewrote slow, while waiting to rpm go trough 1st gear, you could actually read full menu of Mc Donalds, in time of reaching speed of 70, which was close to top speed of those, you could read bible or Hamlet of Shakespeare. One must ask question, why there was throttle pedal, when they could have installed just a red button with large letters GO! written on it.

I'm sure that little pug is fair bit faster than any of that, but I will not bite anything told from it that includes word explosion, manageable is ok, even swift for NA diesel would be easy to believe, but explosion, well maybe explosion at bottom of deepest spot in a sea :D

Hiace van with 2.4 NA diesel was not horribly slow, it was relatively easy to keep up with traffic.

Doesn't really matter if it's slow - I bet it's still quicker than a 1.4 340 anyway  My V40's trip computer constantly reads an average speed of 27mph and I'm not exactly a slow driver when the road opens up. Plus in that you always feel in a hurry because you're faster than most other cars. Can totally see the appeal of a chugger to be honest :D

Indeed, it does not matter that it is slow and I think that your busy roads it matters even less. My average speed is usually around 72-74, that is km/h, which is maybe something around 50? Anyway I rarely exceed 80km/h, but then again I rarely drive below 70km/h as here you are almost always first at intersection as there are no others at front of you, well not even behind of you so first is bit misleading

VND has your pug bosch pump? For veggie oil usage such would be best, but don't know from those NA models which pump they got.

1.4 in 340 might be bit little, car still does weight quite a bit, Citroen BX has 1.4 too, it is bigger, has less drag and is lighter than 340, which is bit odd, but BX is under 1000 while at least late model 340 is over 1000. Those french like 309 are probably still with diesel weighting less than 340 diesel for example, they are like paper in a crash too.

340 diesel is probably ultimate slow, it is heavy for it's size and has really small NA diesel, Golf had same size diesel, but hundreds of kg less weight.

With 240 overtaking was bit of challenge, especially with those drivers on our roads that start accelerating, city driving no problems as long as you did not stop, climbing hills where you had to merge to traffic at bottom of the hill without or tiny ramp was a pain as it could not keep 100km/h to most hills.

Mine is a Lucas pump and injectors, but I do plan an Xud 2.1 td conversion (with Bosch pump) at some point.

It would be spoiled then, would not be slow

2.1 is not as good as XUD9TE 1.9l, some of latter were also with Bosch pump too. Can't remember what was bad thing with 2.1 but it had something that gave it stay clear in my books.

Really?
Thats interesting. I origonally planned a 9TE conversion from a 306 Dturbo, but I thought the 2.1 would be better.
Theres lots of XUD9TEs kicking around, so I could always pop one of those in.

Think I would lose a few MPGS though......................... :(

Oh and there is bad batch of xud9te engines, it was something from 97- onwards that you better steer clear from.

9te can be very good for MPG, 3.6l/100km two tank average with 200kg load and wagon ZX body is my best result from it. 309 being lighter and more aero in general shape, it should be even better, whatever that is in MPG, I'm sure that it is better than what you are currently getting

Turbo models can get better mpg than non turbos too, it has to do with BSFC maps, diagrams and clever things that make one's head spin, but to put it simple, more air is more economy with diesel, as with diesel you are always running lean and at low power demand with turbo you can go even more lean than with NA motor. There is always a limit where there is not enough power coming out, but at steady speed you don't need much power and no throttle butterfly means that you can get boost with very little fuel as long as air is moving enough to overcome internal resistances and so on.

If one could decrease displacement of 9te and put silly turbo and lot of boost to make enough power when needed, then it would be even more economical.

If you open boot a bit and duct tape it to such position that angle is no more than 20 degrees, then you would gain few MPG an maybe 10Mph top speed, but it might be already bit extreme

Your lowering is getting better MPG too, but you really need to lower rear too to get that improvement as raised rear actually causes now more drag than original position.

My next target is 3l/100km, but it might take a while as at the moment I don't have even single car on road.

1.9s are dogs. I know a fella with a BX auto and when he's in Sunday driver mode manages nearly 70 mpg and when not acting his age manages about 48 mpg.

It's also been officially clocked by Dumfries & Galloway Polis at 96mph.

A bit slow off the line with the waft-o-matic, but still returns good mpg with the added bonus of magic carpet ride and the ability to embarrass a lot of cars on the corners.

VND, do yourself a favour and instead of dickin' around with swapping motahs, just get a Bob Bosch pump. (No paperwork hassles, etc.)

Just filled it up.

All local driving.
500 miles on a tank.
55mpg.

Not bad for £56. 8)

Its not just the pump Rich.

Its the pump, the injectors, pulley, the fuel lines from pump to injectors, some injector seals and a mounting bracket which needs relocating.

Complimacated.

With the limited wiring involved and the number of identical fitment parts, it would be FAR easier to change the whole engine.
