Just had the car serviced and it's had the brake pads changed. For some reason, they make a rather loud squeak when the brakes are lightly applied. Under heavy braking they're fine, however.
When my Grandad owned the car, he had some non-Volvo pads (I think they were Uniparts) put on in one of it's services, but they made a horrible sqeaking noise too..he said the noise my car is making now is exactly the same as what it made back then. Should I get the pads changed to official Volvo ones? Is there any decent, cheaper alternative?
Cheers for any replies!

its important that the impulse surfaces (touching the sides of the pads' metal ground plates) are thoroughly cleaned, preferably filed, and lubricated with a bit of copper grease before you mount new pads.
also, most aftermarket pads have rough edges because of the manufacturing process. also, file these smooth, and add a bit of copper grease.
after this, the pads should slide into position easy!!
if the pads do not have a thin layer of 'soft stuff' on the back, also add a bit of copper grease there (only a very thin smear! do NOT spoil copper grease on the dust seals!!!!)
observing these methods you can use the cheapest pads available, without squealing.

Hello
I had a problem with some brake pads from German and Swedish in one of my 340. Under heavy braking the brakes were quiet but light braking made them make loud squeeling noises! Very embarrasing driving through the town centre with these sort of brakes!
The problem was that the pads were too hard so we changed for a softer compound. Now... if only I could remember the name of the product...
As said above, copper grease is good as it absorbs the vibration and damps it preventing the squeal noise. If this still doesnt work and you have given the pads about 100miles to bed in, then Id change for a softer compound.
Interesting that GM in the 1990s spend considerable time investigating why brake squeal occurs. By redesigning the size of the gaps in the side of the disc ( for modern abs cars ) they managed to prevent brake squeal from even occuring.... shame it didnt go into production.....
