Little update,

Wheel bearings still making a noise, not done anything else to it but the noise is getting worse. I'm getting to the point where i'll pay someone to do a propper job.
I just have very little time and even less motivation to work on the car. I've spent lots of hours working on it over the last year: lowering, headgasket, the diff episode, this wheel bearing. Lots of time when i should have been enjoying meself. I am now left with a car that I don't enjoy driving, i worry constantly about the cable tied gearlinkages, noises and grinding of the gearbox, if the expensive diff is ok, the wheel bearing banging at the back, the leaky radiator that makes me spend a fair few quid on coolant a week, the suspension which seems determined to rot away - lost both radius arm bush cups on both sides during the snow. It's feeling like i've put a lot of work in and the car is actually worse than before. I've driven this car on 400 mile trips, without a worry. Now going further than 5 miles from my house is a major worry and I find myself choosing to walk places rather than take the car. I'm not going to get rid of it - i cant afford to buy another car and i like this one too much. I just felt the need to write this down lol.

My problem list is as follows, in rough order of priority:

Wheelbearing - gearbox - gear linkages - leaking diff - radiator - blowing + mis-shaped exhaust - Front suspension - rusty rear chassis x-member - wheel arch rust - Leaky cold start injector - Leaky sunroof

Those are the main problems. Problem is most take up a couple of days work, require it not to rain etc. etc. It's just all a bit crap as I have no-where to work and my mechanic mates are all too busy to help. I have plans for 2.3T engines and multi link suspension, ITB's and all sorts but All the problems need fixing first. Plus my trip to europe is looking less and less likely as the list of things to fix on the car gets bigger and bigger.

I know there's no magical solution to all these problems (and this is JUST the car!) It's going to have to be lots of hard work and lying in mud and rain but i've run out of motivation at the moment as every job i do seems to go tits up.

Anyway, i got the 5x7's stuck in the parcel shelf and wired up to an amp and it works ok for me :)

I feel your pain dude. I hit a few low points with mine since I had it, so I know how you feel!! It'll all work out in the end though! After a while I found I had nothing else to do, so ended up fixing stuff and niggles to occupy myself, and got back into the swing of things.

That's part of owning a retro car though I guess, its a ball ache a fair bit of the time, but if you had a car that always worked, you'd be bored crapless.

KEEP THE FAITH! :D Hope you get it all sorted ok. What about a cheap gazebo?

Dude, it's winter. I've got 2 cars I'm meant to be fixing and I haven't ventured out to do anything on them (well... one's in london still) since October.

Winter sucks, we'll all get our mojo back in a couple of months.

cheers guys, yeah guess it is just winter and the joys of retro ownership. It was ever since the gearbox change really and that was in summer, was never happy with it after that.

Gazebo has been suggested to me plenty of times but i've not got one yet lol. It would make things a bit more bearable.

That said i might just pay someone to do my wheel bearing again for me, just so i dare drive the car round left hand corners again lol.

Found a few photos i've not put on here and thought i may as well :)

Matt, keep at it! I get alittle frustrated with my car but then i get in it and I love it again. The car looked great when I saw it in the summer! Like i say, im pretty sure the stub axle should be pressed in for it to correctly in place.

Just bought an omex launch control rev limiter so that should help me keep at it :D

Pressing the stub axle into the bearing would have to be done while the bearing was in the axle though :/ Haynes manual said just tightening the nut would do it. I have thought it may just be the wheel, some swapping around to be done tomorrow afternoon. If I have time I'll change a radius arm mount so the front suspensions good again.

TBH matt i think the haynes is wrong, I was adviced to press it in by a mechanic. You can press the stuff axle into the bearing on a press but the back plate and bolts need to be in place

I only use haynes as a technical reference. It's very much wrong on the series for so many jobs.

I don't like using it but There is no green book that has the correct procedure.

here's what ride_on said about getting the axleshaft into a bearing in that thread he linked before:
Ride_on wrote:... I see the manual mentions about 'not using excessive force', I guess it might be possible to damage the inner on the drive flange side if it catches or there is alot of friction. I havn't done that part yet, but I had hoped minimal tapping would be enough to get it in to get the drive flange nut on, which will then 'push' only against both side bearing inners. Also of course you never want to 'hammer' bearing surfaces together.

The perfect way would be to tap axleshaft in while supporting the bearing inner on the drive flange side until you get enough thread through to use the nut. You could also use the drive flange +nut itself for partial assembly, and maybe take it off again for installation to the De Dion axle. Or try to install the Axleshaft after assembling to the De Dion Axle.

Basically you want to assemble by only 'compressing' the bearing inner together...
That's pretty much what I've done. Looking at this image I cant see how just using the nut to pull it through wouldn't work though?

I can see that the nut would pull it through, but to be sure I would press it, but of course I had easy acess to use a press so its easier said than done :?

Really?! I'll have a look through my VOC cd of green books, wonder if V3M is missing one.

EDIT
Service Bulletin, up to 1985MY wrote:This Service Bulletin is a supplement to the Repairs and maintenance Service Manual, Section 7, Springs, shock absorbers and wheels 340, 1976-19.., Group 77, Hubs

As the Group that deals with 'Bearings' has been relocated from the Final drive Service manual 4(46) to Section 7(77), this Section is now complemented with this Service Bulletin which describes the methods for removing and fitting the rear wheel bearings.
I have both the upto 1985 MY and the 86 onwards MY Service Bulletins here, but no pdfer at the moment. Matt, pm me an email address and I will sort you something out.

Cheers theo!

And chris(s) It seems i have done it in the correct way but i don't remember the haynes telling me anything like 220nM, I seem to remember 60 ish :/

Will have a look under ASAP and see if I can sort it before it's damaged (although it's probably fucked already)

Thanks a million Chris, I thought I'd had a good look in the green books :)
