Leaking windshield

Post by 360GL » 29 Apr 2004 08:02 pm

My windshield is leaking around the upper edge and the water collects at the bottom of the car. With so much rain lately, the carpet is wet all the time and I guess my floor will start to rust.

Is there a temporary fix I can do at home? What to use as a sealant?

thanks

You may have already solved this by now, but I actually took my recently acquired 360GLT out for its first drive in the rain today and found water dripping on to my gear-changing hand. When I got home I checked to see where the water could be getting in, and I noticed that the broad, metal clip that covers the place where the rubber windscreen surround meets was missing. I don't fancy my chances of finding a replacement, so I'll probably resort to a tube of silicone windscreen sealant. It won't look nice, but it should work. Same problem on the back window too - it must have been happening for some time because there's a rust hole about 2 cms diameter on the inside of the tailgate.

My clips there, but the rubber has shrunk by about an inch, so it only clips on one side!!!! (and yeah, bathroom sealant works, used it on my boot)

Don't use bathroom sealant! Silicon sealer will go hard and brittle resulting in the return of the leaking window seal and an even harder job to put it right. I used 3M windscreen sealer, this does not "set" and can be put on in the wet or dry giving an instant seal, it is applied with a sealant "gun". I would go around the whole window especially if when you look under the rubber surround the original sealant is "crumbly". Clean it out as best you can but do the rubber/car body and the rubber/window glass, this should provide a waterproof seal.

I advise to fix windshield leaking as soon as possible, because in our GL it wasn't been fixed and when I fixed it, it was a bit too late because the surrounding areas of the windshield had been rusted pretty badly. So it is best to fix leaking problems.

Dealer was not Volvo, some small car make up shop that also sell cars. But those pools are nice, I mean rubber mats, water gets into it and I just throw it away. Also only when heavy rain. :)
