Either way Dai I'd still rather have both top and bottom welded. Two are better than one!

Cheers for all the replies. I'm not taking them back for him to do them - ne chance - he only has a MIG set. I'll go back and ask for a refund like.

My MIG set is gas/gasless so might go buy a reel of proper wire and a bottle of gas and sort them that way - use it for the top mounts too

Spent today removing the rear bumper and giving everything a good clean and see where rust is starting. Plan is to sort most of it out tomorrow, there's not an awful lot. I also took the roofrack off to mount the CB antenna and neatly wire in the foglights, I'll nick some waterproof connectors off the corsa lol

Nah, I removed them before taking them up, just stuck em back together to measure stuff for working out springs, and took the photo's then

I would have thought welding the top and bottom will distribute the loads better over the whole body, something that would be very beneficial. It would also seal it and prevent moisture getting between the threaded section and the body/spacer, something to think about if you want them to last.

It sucks abit them doing such a poor job matt, tbh if i was them id be embarrassed to give it back back to a customer. Those welds aren't even acceptable for the spring cup let alone for coil over conversion where its expected that the loads be higher. Maybe they are only used to patching up rotton discoverys and welding diffs, I think you are right to ask for a refund and go to general fabricator maybe?

What you need to do is to take it to them and tell them to fuse crap weld by using TIG.
If you are stuck, bring it over and I will TIG it for you.

yeah i agree. you can get a good amount of heat into it and get a good flowing seem. Something a plug in hobby welder wouldn't probably be able to do (though Ive only ever used very basic welders, and one 3 phrase which i'd be happy to do anything on). take the inserts out to do it too, dont want to boil them.

Its the heat soak that can be the problem if you weld with the dampers in. And then you have the risk of them going pop

Aye Atchi says i can bring them round :) Oh aye, dampers stay at home well away from the heat. They are gas like - can't boil gas haha

Met foggy day before yesterday and he's going to sort me out a replacement light :D It looks way too cool without a rear bumper too.

My Clarke 90 is pretty good for what it is, nowt compared to the 3-phase things at college which were amazing, my first ever bit of welding on one of those was better than what my coilovers look like at the mo :/ I really only use mine for the odd job or exhausts and its great for them.

Not done much, Atchi's gonna sort the coilovers. Still need to find a big lump of steel to make the topmounts, was looking into laser cut plates but its gonna be way beyond my budget so just gonna make em myself.

re. the dash earth problem, I managed to get the oil/brake fluid warning lights to come on with the ignition again, had the plug in the wrong way round on the brake fluid resevoir - not that it should matter but it sorted it. Still need to go under the dash to see why the ambient temp sensor's not working. Also my seatbelt flasher thing's never worked, had a look through the wiring diagram but gt confused with MFU's

Car's feeling nearly sorted now, got 2 main problems left, the gearlinkages and the grating noise from the release bearing when decelereating or when the clutch is up. The clutch judders quite a bit too.

With them fixed, the coilovers and brakes on, tracking doing, change the leafs and a pair of dai's rear coilover helper things I think the car could be pretty well sorted :D I now own 69% of the LSD soon to be 100% when i make a bit more cash for Atchi May have found some slightly less cool wheels that might fit the brakes for pretty cheap, so then the cups will be for sale :(

MOT next month so got a lot of work to do

Picking up some new wheels tomorrow

Image

Clio williams steels, should give me enough room for the RX7 calipers, they are going to go white as I loved that look with the cups. This however means I'm going to sell the cups as i need cash to get these coilovers and brakes finished and Atchi paid off for the diff. Although these wheels on the front and the cups on the back could look amazing.

Will take some pics for the next update as it's been an awful lot of writing for an awful lot of time

Matt,

Laser cutting is my hobby.... welll making data and get it cut at my mate's place.
Let me know what you want to get cut.

My eyes feels bit sore after doing some TIG welding!
I will be able to do fusing of your coil over if you wish. just bring it over when you are ready.

Cheers
Atchi

Yep, Clio williams spares. 15" x 6J. Last night we swapped the tyres off my ATS Cups onto these (by hand in a carpark :D ). Bought some cheap paint just blast over them in silver as I'm skint lol. I'm after a spare if anyone has one?? just because the standard volvo spare in the boot won't clear the RX7 calipers either

Atchi, I'll print off some drawings of what i was thinking for laser cutting, I'll bring them up with the coilovers and see what you think. Hope that means you're feeling better!
