Project: Volvo 360 GLT for the Volvo-Trophy

Post by TheUglyDuckling » 08 Mar 2013 06:57 pm

Hi guys,

a couple of weeks ago I bought an 86 360 GLT - that one: http://www.volvo300mania.com/forum-uk/v ... =8&t=14577. Since I didn't get anything done yet, I thought I'd start a topic :P

I will convert the car into a track tool for the Volvo-Trophy on the Nordschleife. The Trophy is part of the GLP, and that means I have to keep the car road legal -i.e. german road legal :?

It will be quite a slow conversion, the first run is on April 20th. Until then, I will do a little welding and replace the suspension. I hope to be able to do something about the brakes as well, but have to talk to TUV first.

I will keep you updated - eventually :D

Hints, information and comments are much appreciated!

Flo

Here's a little pic I took in January:

Hi mate.
Car looks great. Has someone nicked your headlight wipers? Good luck.
Cheers Mark.

Nice! Keep us updated with your progress, I look forward to see how you manage to keep it (German) road legal and yet modify it for track use :-)

If you do start removing interior bits, please hang on to them. It's hard getting hold of GLT-specific parts this side of the water ...

Cheers

Thx! Nope, poverty spec german GLT. No headlight wipers, no tailgate wiper, no aircon, no power steering, no central locking, no electric windows. Just lightness

Time for a tiny update.

So far I just did a bit of maintenance, replaced the cam belt + water pump, swapped the spark plugs for new ones, broke the ignition cable in the process, installed new ignition cables, replaced the oil filter, oil and engine coolant, installed a new fuel filter and got rid of that awkward air filter / intake system that goes all around the engine, through the cabin and back. At least it felt like that.

When I replaced the cam belt I noticed that the old belt was 20° early  - that explains both the strange response / power and the fact that someone had fiddled with that srew that nobody is supposed to touch  She runs a lot better now.

Talked to TÜV, and, if I involve them throughout the process there's a good chance I can get sensible modifications registered. Today a parcel with lowering springs, coilovers rear, lowering blocks and lots of polybushythingies arrived. Thx Robbert & Dai! I hope I'll get around to install them soon.

Other than that I plan to install vented discs and calipers from the 480 Turbo. Drilling disc would probably get my german citizenship revoked  I searched a bit but did not find out much - has anoyne done that before and could give me a few hints?

Oh and I hope to have the car registered with the suspension and the 480 Turbo brakes by the end of May. I already missed the first two GLPs and would like to participate on the June 1st.

I'll be following this thread closely :-) Let me know what TÜV you go to, by the time they've gone through all your stuff they'll have no trouble with bodykits and sports steering wheels :-)

My springs und polybushes arrived from Dai arrived yesterday too. What length springs will you be running?

Cheers

Sure, if you have sensible modifications give me a call, I'll hook you up. Mind you, he doesn't register modifications because he`s nice and wants to be friends... not at all. He's thorough and can be a real pita. But he also goes a long way testing and checking and scrutinizing everything. He`s an engineer at heart, not some check-box-ticking clerk.

To give you and especially those happy people not subject to TUV an idea: Just a few weeks ago we installed Tarox brakes with 320mm discs and 6 pot calipers to a V70 I R. Now as you'll knowTarox is a brand name, and the brakes already came with lots of paperwork. Still, to get them registered, there were lots of test runs necessaray, including measuring the brake pedal pressure needed for a certain rate of deccelearation. Also testing for fading (10 or 15* 160 to 60 kmh), follwowed immediately by high speed braking from 200 kmh to 0, both fully loaded and empty, and disabling the ABS to check whether to much brake pressure goes to the rear, and then testing on gravel, and so on... a full tank of fuel was emptied, and apparently the devices needed for measuring all these things are quite rare in Germany. Some modifications to the brake system were neccessary, and then the whole package was retested. But we got there in the end!

I excpect similar routines with both the suspension and the brakes... sm84

Crikey! I wasn't thinking of anything that spectacular. My thoughts were along the lines of getting some accessories for the GLT added to the papers, like the steering wheel and bodykit, and maybe more power for the B19A DLS one day. I once wrote a detailed letter to the Volvo "Homologationsabteilung" in Cologne asking about "ABEs" but never recieved a reply :-(

Cheers

The 360 only has one serious spot of rust: the lower part of the right front wing. So today I took it off to replace it with the new one that came with the car.
Unfortunately I also discovered some serious rust on the inner wing.
Foto 2.JPG
You can`t really see it in the picture, the lower part is dissolving. Part of it will have to be cut out and replaced. But hey, if that`s the only part, I don't care too much.

New one is waiting:
Foto 4.JPG
The left front wing also came with the car, but there`s no need to replace it at the moment. I also checked that hose between the fuel filler and the fuel tank. One clamp had already been replaced, but the other one was only just holding on. Replaced it. Thanks to this forum!

My mate had just received a parcel from Sweden for his 940. We seized the opportunity and fooled around a little...
Foto 6.JPG
But it`s too early for that - yet. First I want to see how the car handles on the Nordschleife. If I like it, this lump will be fitted later this year...much later:
Foto 1.JPG
But before that I will have to get a new water cooler... I could get the fins out easily by caressing it with a brush...:

More to come this saturday - I hope. Once I get a certain parcel with lots of nuts and bolts (thx Mac), I will fit the new suspension. 8)

Does he know that he needs to cut the flange off that manifold and weld it back on the right way?

He doesn't need to - its going the right way round into his 940.
We just tried out figure out where we could put a turbo in the 360. In the lower back doesn't fit - so we tried for upper front

Your photo shows it in the right position for fitment in 2/7/9 series cars. They are made in China but for some reason the mistake has never been corrected.

There are two nearly identical exhaust manifolds - one is indeed an upper front mounted turbo. It is supposed to fit 240/740/940. But the one in the pic is the other version - "Turbogrenrör Turbo bakåt och neråt". Fitting only 740 and 940. Unless they send the wrong one.

Interestingly his manifold is 40 € cheaper then the one I think you are referring to - though it looks like just a flipped version. Maybe the wrong flanged ones were just the cheaper lower back ones - send by mistake or a desire to increase the profit?

It is the 240 one I was thinking of.

Are you going to be keeping the LPG system that is on the engine? Looks like zavoli pan injectors or maybe Magic jet with AEB wiring loom and Flashlube system installed.
