Hi Bart! I'm familiar with Folkrace shop...very good value! Have you had any issues with hardness of the lobes? That was my only concern. What I meant was a cam more like a normally aspirated one (i.e. still designed with forced induction in mind, but with more overlap than a normal turbo cam...which is a good thing, when you've got a nice large turbine!). Very interesting project :)

cheers

I've had no problems what so ever with it.

I opend a topic on my car so we don't have to litter Trabitom's topic anymore!

No worries, Bart :-) Here's the link to your topic:

I just think it's just oxidised ... It's the corner metal bracket all right.
S10NPH wrote:Thanks for putting up the story of your car Tom, do you use it as your daily? I like the picture of you trying to fix it under the autobahn!
It was lucky I had a spare battery and tools with me. That sinking feeling when first the radio dies, then the indicators stop working, and finally the engine cuts out ... not nice!

It was my daily for about 6 months, from when I took my GLi off the road (Summer 2011) to when I started driving a "modern" Skoda (December 2011). Now it's our second "daily" if you like, it doesn't get kept out of all weathers like the DLS / Trabi (and the Mk1 while I still had it) but its garaged and I try and keep it off the salt as much as possible.

The next job is to fit everything from the parcel which arrived from Dai the other week :-) Standard GLT springs (308mm) and assorted polybushes/ARB link rods. I have some Konis lined up for the front too.

Cheers

I had it once on a 480T, at night. Was following a friend as we'd just picked the car up, turned out the speedo was less functional than one might have hoped so was letting him set a legal pace. Started hiccuping as the fuel pump started giving up, so I went to flash my lights to let chap know I was coming off at the exit (300 yrds away). All the car did was put it's pop ups down in a strop so I couldn't see much any more, and inertia rolled us most of the way up the slip road.

Yeah, don't want to do that again!

It all depends where you have to stop and how far away from home this "where" is ;-) Having tools AND a charged battery with me at the time was pure luck. It'd been standing for a few months before I picked it up and I wasn't sure whether the battery would have enough charge.

The alternator failed on me in the GLi once too, but I was given plenty of warning with the battery light glowing in the dash. The voltage regulator on the GLT seemed to be working just enough for the battery light not to register, but not enough to keep the car going for more than 300kms.

Cheers

Small update for this car too:

Nothing spectacular, except it has a fresh MOT and a different number plate. I don't drive it in the winter anymore anyway, so I've put it on a "seasonal registration" from March to November to avoid the worst of the salt.

Thanks :-)

The steering wheel popped up for sale just around the corner from me, a few years ago. I like it ... but I don't mind the "bus type" original either, particularly if it has a "GLT" insert ;-)

Cheers

I don't mind the standard wheel either to be honest, but love the look of the R Sport one :)
