Brake Upgrades
Re: Brake Upgrades
Iam on 165/65/13 on a 13" 8J -10 wheel for the front. i have spent a lot of time driving fast and i can say that over time the brakes do start to fade out, not badly but its not good all the same.
best thing i can think to do would be to fit http://www.dcperformance.co.uk/uprated/ ... o/360.html and see what kinda change they make. they also do pads but i would hope the stock pads would do.

Re: Brake Upgrades
Probably not the best place to ask. But hey ho..
Ive seen rx7 4 pots used and heard of 240 4 pots but not actually come across any pics of how theyre mounted, nor any info on disk offset and what vented disks are being used
(I started running my ax on vented disks and 4 pot ultralite calipers and im addicted to the stopping power and control
)
Does anyone have more info on the above conversions?? Do they need brackets making up or is there calipers available that will bolt directly to the lugs? What vented disk options are there? Any direct fit OE disks or does everything need machining to fit the hubs/spigot/pcd correctly?
Ill be looking into this in more detail when I can get my hands on a spare pair of struts/hub assy, but if anyone has any prior experience that will make my search a bit easier id love some input
Thanks

Re: Brake Upgrades
Rx7 4 pot calipers can be used, with golf g60 vented brake discs. A bracket needs to be made up to mount the caliper, and the discs need to be re-drilled to be bolted to the back of the volvo hubs. Then you need to get some brake pipes with the correct ends on. This conversion needs at a minimum 15inch wheels... depending on offset however not all 15s will have the clearance
There is another conversion using volvo 240 4 pots, capri discs and a spacer to correct the positioning of the disc, this fits under 13s however if your gonna use 15s use the rx7 stuff as I've had all the stuff (just never got around to using it all and sold it) the rx7 stuff is beasty! And you'll struggle to overheat them
Hope this helps!

Re: Brake Upgrades
TUV doesn't like drilled discs, so I have searched the 2010 Brembo Catalogue looking for bigger, vented discs that could fit our 69mm centre bore and 4*100 wheel fittings. It was only +14.000 lines...
Pretty much the only car with suitable discs I found is a Proton Impian. Discs are vented, 256*24, overall width 45,5mm. Brembo-Code 09.7043.10 Don't know if the width might be a poblem. Another alternative would be vented Discs for an 71-75 Opel Rekorc with 246*23, but the centre bore is bigger (73mm) and its also wider with 55,5mm overall width.
Has anyone looked into these?

Thanks for the input
The larger CB on the rekford disks would be easily overcome with a spigot ring of some description, dia looks about right for what I want
The rex stuff does look lovely, and if they require a bracket, that should mean its possible to make a bracket up to suit whatever offset and dia (within reason, and pad size dependant) I might have to get hold of some to mock up
How are the 240 calipers mounted? Are they wide enough for vented disks? I thought capris used solid disks, i know theyll take mondeo vented disks if you space the m16 calipers out 10mm or so
My 266mm hi spec setup fits under 13s
I think I want 14s for the ovlov ... spotted a couple compomotives that Id like, or some bbs ra's, either way clearance shouldnt be an issue for the sized setup im after

Re: Brake Upgrades
Righto, bit of digging later and i see the overall height of the rekords is waaay out, so they'll be a no go. Bmw e30 disks look better with 35.1 overall height and at 260mm dia they may well get under some 13s. 66mm CB means a big spigot ring!
Bmw e12 calipers might be worth a go too. Been looking through ebay at all the 4 pots on the second hand market. Mg tf 160, metro turbo and scooby calipers seem the most abundant. There doesnt appear to be much made for 9-10" disks.

Re: Brake Upgrades
Not sure. The way I understand it, the center bore of our Volvo 360s brakes is 69 mm! It is not identical to the wheel centre bore. So quite a lot of discs are out, unless you want to drill a larger center bore. Would the 45mm width of the Impian's discs be possible?thododd wrote: 66mm CB means a big spigot ring!
Re: Brake Upgrades
My head is a bit frazzled, I got 52mm from somewhere but I now see youre right
So, thats only 1.5mm of metal to take off
id rather take a little off the centrebore than drill out an incorrect pcd
So, thats only 1.5mm of metal to take off

Re: Brake Upgrades
I'm definately getting closer to being in the market for bigger + Vented brakes and reviewed and resurrecting this thread.
I've tried Ferodo DS2500 and DS3000 track pads and additional air cooling, still more to do, but feels like I am tinkering at the edges and need a bigger step or just everything possible.
Running 11psi on a B230FT 360 for track day in Kirkistown (which is challenging for brakes), main symptom is pad burning, breakup and simply too fast wear down (15-20 mins) presumably all due to over heating. I'm seeing >500C on the disk after a cooling lap. Disks are scored to buggery and clearly unhappy. Pedal feels pretty firm most of the time, but I need to double braking distance to make them last and not fade. Finding some new symptoms that I am not familiar with like hard pedal and not enough braking.
I go by my last comment that 14" should be the minimum, but I don't know why people want to fit 13" wheels when the 'sports version standard was 14". My show/track day car needs to be able to fit 14" rims, but I run 15" on the track giving more air space and more open alloys.
Obviously vented is the way to go, then go for whatever size increase we can accomodate with a suitable caliper.
Is the plan to use an existing disk and additionally machine or just get a custom disk?
Of interest on Brembos site scanning:
The 360 reference point is 239x29mm (diaxheight),
Available is

Re: Brake Upgrades
What are your brakes like in normal driving conditions ;-?
I am only asking because I had burning pads when my servo was not adjusted correctly ;-?
Did make me think ;-?

Re: Brake Upgrades
Brakes are fine normally even in Mondello park they were fine with the DS2500 but I wasn't maxing out the brakes, first time out and no overboost. Similar cars running same weight, BHP and brakes size with road pads where having trouble keeping up with me. Now I have a bit more confidence in the car I'm trying to max out the braking on traction.
They are not bad brakes, just running out of thermal capacity in extreme circumstances that modern cars designed for bigger wheels are dealing with fine.

Re: Brake Upgrades
So after lots of research and test buys I'm now on a solution for 15" wheels at the moment. This is easier
Disk: Merc W168 A190 (276mm)
Caliper: Merc W168 A160/170 caliper and carrier (for smaller disk)
They use the same pads so the radius difference is ok for Mercedes.
The disk gives a similar offset to the original, allowing space for the disk guard and space to the rubbers on the ball joints. Also more importantly enough space for a chunky adaptor without much trimming of the Volvo or Merc parts. The 360 brake bolts will fit from the opposite side (with a small trim of the Mcer Carrier)
Adaptor being printed in plastic at the moment.

Been checking the Merc pads availability, only available in Green stuff yuk! Will have to be enough!

Re: Brake Upgrades
Well adaptor prototype in PLA fitted after a little extra material removal and retapping my incorrectly designed threads.
Everything fits nice in 15" wheels but not 14". A set of 4 pots fix caliper would be better. Also a little worried about thin section of the merc disk where the bolts go through. its very close to the edge of the hole and the Merc disk is 1 or 2mm thinner I think. A custom disk could be done if necessary.
