1960 Volvo PV544 'The Mighty Quinn'

Post by NimminS » 09 Feb 2014 06:22 pm

Hello, I'm Jamie,
wp_ss_20171111_0002.png
24 from Durham. My brother is Nimminz on here with his 360. I've joined up to post my Volvo, It's not a 300 but is a Volvo I hope you will be interested in. I'm new to forums but have been looking at things on this one for ages because of my brother. Some of you may know me from BKV 2012 when I came down with Matt in his 360.

So here it is, My 1960 Volvo PV544a
It was originally a b16a but was swapped for a later b18 sport engine on twin SU carbs which solved the need for leaded fuel.
It's got a K-cam in too and was fully rebuilt 35K miles ago.
The gearbox was originally a 4-speed manual but this has been swapped for a volvo 4-speed with overdrive, operated by a switch on the dash. It's also got a volvo LSD out of, I think, a 120
When I bought the car last October, the previous owner, who intended to rally the car, had fitted cobra racing seats and TRS harnesses and a custom dashboard. I have the original, re-trimmed, seats and dashboard that's just missing the water temp. Gauge. These are to go back in soon.
It's had extensive restoration in 2009 including a respray and rust repairs. It's got triumph spitfire fueltank mounted behind the rear seats as the OEM tank is pretty small. It's got a pair of spot lights mounted up front too.
Some other bits and bobs include: New steering wheel, which will go back standard, Speakers installed and a under dash DIN mount stereo which I've removed, New electronic ignition system rather than the points and condenser system before ,
I've not done much since getting the car, I used it for my wedding and honeymoon in November last year. I intend to put it back to standard apart from the engine, ignition, gearbox etc. which have been upgraded for good reason. Progress will probably be slow but i'll keep you updated :)
(EDIT TOOK ALL PHOTOS OFF FROM PHOTOBUCKET YOU KNOW WHY
Will get more up as soon as possible and will update this thread as alot has happened
)
Let me know what you think,
Cheers,
Jamie

That is a nice PV :D Looks very clean and the right sort of mods. The B16 will also run on unleaded without any issues but the B18 has a better spare parts availability and is a stronger engine. The works rally drivers were split between B18 and B16 as the B16 revved more freely but less low down grunt so some of the drivers stuck with the B16 after the B18 was launched.

So what is quickest the PV or 360?

Really nice car, spotted it on your brother's facebook but didn't realise it had these nice touches to it. Looks like it's been improved over the years to make it even better than original. Good stuff!

Cheers at the moment i would say that they were evenly matched but with the 360 having the upper hand because of the more modern gearbox and engine but with the 544 being slightly lighter it keeps up ok.

I was concerned that a car of that age would be on leaded fule and didn't want to do any of the work to change to unleaded, although relatively straight forward i wouldn't be able to do it and buying fule additive would be too expensive for me.
The upgrades that have been done are good although the aesthetic look to the car in wanting to make it look original do the original dash, steering wheel and front seats in hoping that it will all be done by this BKV.
i might keep the tach and some of the other gauges but put them in a holder under the dash.
but all the engine work and drivetrain work IS an upgrade and that's partly why i bought it.

thanks for the replies i will post all the work i do in the future.
cheers
Jamie

Nice one Jamie!

The car is really nice, the bloke who had it before spent a fortune on it. It runs mint and everything feels good and strong. I've driven it twice i think and you just can't stop smiling.

With the date of first registration in sweden being 1960, we thought there may just be a chance the manufacture date was '59 and would mean no MOT. Jamie contacted volvo and got a letter back confirming the date to be june '60.
