Yes, services rate is much lower, for example, if I sell you a headlight it will have 23% vat applied as a sale of goods but if you ask the service department to get you the headlight, (from me) it will incur only 13.5%.macplaxton wrote:May this be something to do with the VAT rate on the job? Last time I had work done on a head (no parts required, just machining/pressure test and the like) I noticed that it came in under the reduced rate of 13.5%, not the standard rate.Number 47 wrote:I was talking today with a guy who works with an engine re-manufacturing company... i asked him about prices and I'm pretty impressed with them.
I was quoted €50 to hone the bores if I bring a bare block, €50 to skim a flywheel, €20 to ultrasonically clean injectors. I expected much higher costs.
@ride on.
I appreciate what you are saying. If I had a service history with this engine I would be likely to leave it alone but it is a bit of a lucky dip. The guy i am dealing with seems honest and i trust him from talking to him but I just won't take the risk of popping it in without a thorough inspection. I expect after 100,000 miles and 25 years it will have some issues and will of course have wear. I don't want to have to take the car off the road in the future so the big jobs, (crank shells, rings etc) will be done now for peace of mind. I am lucky that I can pick the brains of the mechanics at work, an engine is an engine and we have BMW, Ford and Toyota master technicians at work who are rebuilding them on a daily basis. We also have a sister dealership that has volvo. So I won't be stuck doing this but i reckon I'll do OK following the haynes.
Got a layer of topcoat on the subframe last night. Sick of paint! Same again each night till the weekend. Then it will be under the car for prep before fitting all this back together.
