DPG F7P road rally car

Post by Alex Laidlaw » 06 Apr 2014 09:42 pm

Ok chaps, starting a thread for DPG, my road rally 340, is several years overdue.

Since last appearing at BKV/V3M national a few years ago I've fitted a standard F7P, very slowly!

DPG is now back on the road and pleasingly managed to do 200 road miles and an autosolo organised by Harrow Car Club at Bovingdon airfield today.

Had a shakey start cutting out under load shortly after I joined the motorway, was only able to convince it to do about 35mph, thankfully this was in a 50mph road works section so wasn't too bad. Eventually it just cleared up and ran fine all day with no sign of the problem. I suspect it could be contaminated fuel/clogged filter.

Autosolo was great fun, picked up speed throughout the day, took a bit of time to get used to using the full 7000rpm, absolutely flys using revs, but still feels like a B14 trying to pull at 3000rpm!

Fitted some other go faster bits too it as since I last did a competition, now running Toyo T1Rs 195/50/15 and Dai's 25mm anti-roll bar, those changes have transformed the car, think it has a lot more grip now but at the expense of ride comfort and somewhat less progressive at the limit than high profile 13s. I think with some dampers and stiffer springs DPG could be will make a decently competitive autosolo car.

All the hard work has paid off. Good to see it together and running with the new engine.

Ditto, it's been a while!

(Maybe if I ever fix mine again, we can both make it to a Bovingdon or a Chelmsford, would be a good laugh)

For some reason this slate blue is growing on me, it looks really good when clean!

Done a couple more autosolos in DPG now. Bath Motor Club at Kemble airfield was brilliant fun, nice open flowing tests and did the SWMC Corkscrew solo at Throckmorton today, morning test was a bit too tight for the Volvo but afternoon tests were much better.

Fitted Dai's uprated standard ride height front springs and braided front brake hoses before today's solo, front adjustable damper inserts are on order as well.

What front dampers do you have in her now? Spring rate looks a bit low to me, it's causing the thing to pitch on the diagonal and lift the inside rear, Fake used to do that but stiffer fronts cured a lot of it.

Glad it's not just me who hits the wipers at times!

sprimg rate is 50% stiffer but the dampers are just bog standard so will not be controlling the spring well at all.

Shame the camera lens wasn't a bit wider, we missed out on your hamster wheeling on that tight course. Sounds like it's running well. LSD? ;)

Been busy in the Volvo last few weeks, done two grass autotests with Loughborough Car Club, great fun sideways at walking pace and the Abingdon Carnival autosolo on Saturday, which was a really well organised event. I went down on the Friday night and camped for the early start. There's camping/beer tent on the Saturday night and a stage rally to watch on the Sunday, I couldn't stay for it this year but probably will in the future.

Autosolo started very wet in the morning then dried out for the afternoon, got a couple of videos:
Test 2, damp and slippy but no longer raining https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBR1-lNYh6E
Test 4, last run of the day and fully dry by this point http://youtu.be/DwxnDetWpk8

Still getting used to doing autosolos in the Volvo, but getting a bit quicker now managed a midfield 24 out of 46 overall at the Abingdon event.

Dai's adjustable fronts have arrived, will fit them this weekend and I've got a pair of Spax for the rear that I bought from Chris a couple of years ago, adjusters are rusted stuck, hopefully in a useful position/balanced on each side. I think even stiffer front springs and a slightly softer front anti-roll bar might reduce the rear wheel lift further and manage some of the understeer, but will see what the adjustable dampers do before rushing to change anything for the next event which is a solo at Oxford on the 22/6.
