Another one point seven to save

Post by mac » 17 Jun 2014 10:35 am

Morning Girls,
Mac has found you another opportunity to save a wee beastie from the great oxidiser in the sky!

I've been approached by a long term owner (one of George's FOTV3 members) who feels it is time for a change, his 300 having finally failed an MOT resulting in a moderately large bill from his garage.

The car is an '88' 3door GL 1.7, a regularly serviced 'daily' based in Norwich that has been with the owner for 24years!
MOT fail is basically on sills and struts (nothing unusual there then).

Owner does not want to see it scrapped but is quite aware that a local yard will give £100-£150 to weigh it in. Personally I do not feel that £250 would be unreasonable to expect.

The owner has sent me a list from his garage which I reproduce below,

"Reasons for refusal of a test certificate

1 Nearside outer (cill) Seat belt anchorage prescribed area is excessively corroded

2 Offside outer (cill) Seat belt anchorage prescribed area is excessively corroded

3 Nearside outer rear (cill) Suspension component mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded

4 Offside outer rear (cill) Suspension component mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded

5 Nearside front Macpherson strut corroded and seriously weakened

6 Nearside front (coil spring) Suspension has inadequate clearance with the bump srop

7 Offside front (coil spring) Suspension has inadequate clearance with the bump stop

8 Nearside front (chassis) Suspension component mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded.

(The garage estimated a cost of approximately £600 to carry out the work required)"

There is a bit of "tradespeak" in there but it looks like collapsing cups and/or broken springs.

No

That's excessive corrosion within 30cm in any direction of the bottom mounting point.

Time to get out the 60cm gym ball...

Mac, I don't suppose the seller could get some photos of the corrosion failure areas?
One man's "excessively corroded" is another man's "5 min fix with a mig".
It's probably too far for me, I'd have to exploit the 'driving it to a test centre' loophole in order to get it home. Beside that, I'd need to sell my Sunny first.

Has it had a tailgate respray at some point? Shouldn't the '1.7' badge be below the '340 GL' badge?
Terms and conditions apply. This post may go down as well as up. Regulated by the Financial Services Authority. Hard hats to be worn. No reversing without a banksman. No admittance to unauthorized persons. Stop that. Put that down. Leave that alone.

Oh man!
Somebody jump on this asap! It's still legal to drive home if you day insure it. Fix the grubby bits, machine polish the paint, hey presto you have yourself a £7-800 car for buttons.

I'm terminally skint, who wants to have a whip round for me to buy it, fix it, then split the profit

C'mon someone, save it! A 3dr 1.7 - that's got to be worth taking a look at.

I am possibly selling my Nissan in the next few days. Sadly the water pump just sheared tonight but that should be a minor inconvenience. I quite fancy this little 340, but it'd be a race against time to grab it before the test expires. Also, I probably can't get it onto my classic policy. :(

30+ with Footman James, who in all fairness only charged an extra £20 for the sunny being 27 years old. £133 fully comp, unlimited miles.

Really? How odd. I'm with FJ.

I've had a "no" from them back in April 2010, when trying to put an 1989 V340 on the policy. Two excuses were proffered: First was that it was not 30 years old - But there was a 28 year old and 24 year old car already on the policy. Second was engine size - But there was already a 1397cc car on the policy. Daft.

Anyway, same car later came up and was added no problem in Oct 2010. As my renewal is in March, it was under exactly the same policy and same underwriters at the time. Around the same time, as well as adding that 21 year old car, I added a 23 year old one too.

At the moment: £172 Comp, Additional driver, U/L miles. That's with 5 cars at 21, 27, 27,31 & 44 years old.

20 quid is their standard admin fee plus another 1.50 for card charge.

Conclusion? You probably can get it on your classic policy
