1.7 into a 1.4 advice?
I'm thinking of putting a 1.7 into my 1.4 because its died completely and I have a 1.7 engine available to me.
I have a bellhousing with output shaft, a renix, all the engine mounts and all the hoses for the 1.7 already.
I know that the rads are different, and the front crossmember, and I will obviously need the wiring for the renix..
What else would I need for the conversion please?
also, how would the 1.4 4 speed box hold up to the 1.7? Anything else like that I would need to consider?

Noone have any input on this subject at all?

What's actually wrong with your 1.4? I'm not sure I'd bother - it's a fairly small upgrade to a 1.7, but it sounds like you have all you need for the conversion. You'll need the rad and electric cooling fan and crank position sensor (I think your car is early enough to havea points and condenser setup?)

What does 'has died completely' mean? Did it explode?
The 1.4 is more reliable that the 1.7, i would try and fix the 1.4 if atall possible.

The 1.7 wont destroy the gearbox anymore than the 1.4 will ... it depends more on how you intend to drive it. If you want the tail out everywhere you go youre likely to break something
Fix the 1.4 or go for an F7, it sounds like you have most of the bits youd need

Re: 1.7 into a 1.4 advice?
The 1.4 in it is literally not worth fixing.. It has problems in pretty much every way it could have problems...
I could buy a decent complete 340 for what it would cost to get all the bits to put it right..
I was thinking the 1.7 because I already have a lot of the parts and my friend said I could have a 1.7 engine mega cheap off him..
So financially it would make sense to go the swap route.
Yeah, I do have the points/condensor setup at the moment.
Thanks for the advice

What is actually wrong with it though? It's a really easy engine to work on so I'd still favour that over a 1.7 swap, unless something bad has happened like a head gasket failure!?

Re: 1.7 into a 1.4 advice?
Well it runs (idle scrambling wildly) until it builds up any kind of crank pressure, the it loses power, pops and misfires so violently that it blows holes in the backbox, and spits its oil out of all of its seals and dies.. Even comes up out of the 3 bolts that hold the rocker cover on.. Then it wont start again until its fully cooled down. But anything over half throttle is totally useless at all times, and its undriveable. I dont have the time or the cash to diagnose and fix all the problems with it, (I've already spent 100 quid on a carb), and it seems a bit stupid to bother when I can get another engine to drop straight in for 30 quid...
Re: 1.7 into a 1.4 advice?
I am in plymouth over the weekend, do you want me to pop up and see you. maybe try and get this engine working?
Re: 1.7 into a 1.4 advice?
Hello all.
Well today I tried to get this 1.4 engine working.
We reconnected the breather from the cam cover to the carburetor base, there was no restrictor in the new pipe, but least it was connected now.
The engine will fire and run when on full choke however as soon as the choke is pushed off, the engine stalls.
I have check for air leaks but unable to find any, jayk is going to trial a different coil.
When car is about to stall, it is like being flooded then a large bang then stalls.
Any advice please
Ben
