Hello From Australia Victoria Rokeby.

Post by martinp » 08 Sep 2016 06:33 pm

Hi there I have been hovering for a bit checking this that and the other about the 360 hatch GLT I have. Just about to start getting the cam belt replaced as I have no idea when it was done last. The speedo had stopped working around 280,000kms. I've got that working now.
I bought the car to use in a cancer council fundraiser called the Sh!tbox rally, where about 200 cars all worth less than $1000 AUD and are driven normally around 4,000kms through the middle of Australia (yes on all the outback roads where normally a $100,000 4WD is used).
SO I now have a Volvo 360 GLT with the fuel injected motor in it and 5 speed manual box. I sort of like the car now I have it on the road (and yes all for less than $1000).
Next years rally we are driving from Adelaide to Cairns via Alice Springs around 4000kms. I think it will make it. Here is a link to the rally website if your are interested http://www.shitboxrally.com.au
If you look under teams and then school down a bit you will find Alien Express GLT which is my team (well my son and myself).
I've replaced a few things to get it on the road so far such as rear brake cylinders, rear engine seal rear axle seal, brake proportioning valve and a fixed a few annoying things such a getting the lights working speedo working (cable had fallen out) and a few door seals.
The car was sort of a one owner - One family owner as the dad who bought it new had died a few years back and mum was getting a bit old then I purchased it for $500 on eBay. So it has sort of been looked after very well by the old man but had been a bit neglected the last few years.
Enough said just now I need to work out how to add a photo of it on here. Cheers Martin.

Welcome to the fold :)

You may be in the shitbox rally but I'm sure you will find the 360 is far from it.

Good luck in next year's rally and be sure to post pictures of it please.

Ha ha, the 360 is a real gem of a car to drive, its going so well if I don't destroy it on the outback dirt roads I may well buy it back and drive it home again. Or if someone is in Cairns next year in June they can drive it back for me! as it may live at Cairns airport for a little while.
I'll post photos if I can get time to do it, we normally overload the phone system in each little community so communication is a problem during the rally.
Cheers.

They are very reliable, but the Bosch injection systems are the only weakness. If the auxillary fuse box (behind the battery) has not already been replaced I'd change that to a modern blade unit. Fuel pumps are not a common failure on these but they will wear out eventually, easy to replace to take a cheap spare as a back up (Bosch ones are expensive). Maybe pull the cover off the injection safety pump relay and check the soldering. Might also be worth taking a crank sensor aswell.

Ah now your taking the fun out of it if I have to take that many spares It has to break down and we do some really dodgy repairs on the side of the road to fix it.
This years rally they replaced a motor in an old escort van and got it going - on the side of the road! lifting it in by hand and one guy standing on the mudguards holding it with a few ratchet straps around his shoulders.
I will be driving it as my every day drive till may next year so I should get a bit of a feel for it if its going to give out.
I might check the soldering on the injection pump relay though.
I also have to make up a steel bash plate to go underneath and also to protect the fuel pump area a bit better. We will be travelling over some pretty rough dirt roads with maybe rocks as big as the wheels to dodge or go over.
Oh and cattle grids are pretty hard on tyres too if you hit them too hard.

Mmmaaaatttteeeeee. Don't bend those wheels if you don't have to. They're pretty sought after in the right circles. she does look quite nice though. I think on a trip that long you'll fall in love with it and find a way to get it home.

I was thinking of getting toyota steel rims if they fit and using them as alloys do have a habit of breaking. I've got five alloys if anyone is after them....

You want 4x100 with an offset of 40 I think. Don't think Toyota steels will fit. No doubt someone will come to your aid with what will though. There aren't many of us in up-side-down-land as a lot of the others all it. I'm over the ditch myself.

Hiya across the ditch there (I am a regular visitor to windy wellytown) I am not sure what rims will fit yet as I'm still tyre kicking at the moment. I thought they were 32mm offset (read it somewhere) but no hurry I'm waiting for a cam belt to arrive so I can resume driving it. (known unknown how long since it was done - just do it)

They could be 32 not too sure. These are non-interferance engines, so you don't have to worry so much if the cambelt snaps. Line it up and away you go. So you can still drive it if you want

A B200E GLT is definitely an interference engine with the 'A' cam. The cambelt is a pretty straightforward job and a belt is only £10, so I'd definitely change that if you don't know when it was done. Search for 'pettaw' on YouTube, his video covers this comprehensively. If your waterpump is making any untoward noises it's worth doing that at the same time, as you'll have the belts, viscous fan and covers off anyway.

Offset ranges from 35-45 I believe, but even down to 25 will still fit - though you'll probably wear out wheel bearings faster. Should be easy enough to get something that fits, 4x100 is very common.

It might be in the English market, but not in our markets. I brought a B200E 360GLT from a guy with a snapped belt. He tried to start it when I went to look at it. Had a look and paid 400 bucks (£210) for it. 70 bucks (£40 later she was away and running. That's the 87 360GLT you'll see in my list below. Later sold it to a Muppet who wrote it off. Brought it back for parts.
