Duchess The Volvo 340 CVT
Re: Duchess The Volvo 340 CVT
Hello all to give you an update, the new gaskets were fitted, the cylinder pressures are 180 to 200 psi, however she is misfiring and running like a bag of nails....
With the help of James, Chris and Mac we have narrowed the issue down to the ignition system.
turns out if you remove the vacuum line from the renix the car will rev normally (with it connected it wont get past 2.5k)
New flywheel sensor has been brought and I have 2 spare renix's on load to try.
The first spare renix did start the car at all, we swapped over coils etc
my renix and my coil = car starts (run not great)
my renix and spare coil = no start
spare renix and spare coil = no start
spare renix and my coil = no start
going to await new sensor and try spare renix number 2.
keep your fingers crossed

Re: Duchess The Volvo 340 CVT
Hi,
I would suggest to use a timing strobe lamp to check the ignition timing.
If the car is running bad on idle, the timing might be completely wrong.
The cause could be a wrong flywheel or wrong mounted flywheel, or a bad sensor...
that would correspond to the problems with the other Renix systems...
Regards
Ralf

Hello all.
So after a new flywheel sensor and renix, still getting a misfire at 2.5k.
So with some head scratching and help from Mac, and checking everything we finally found that the cog that drives the distributor was a tooth out thus the timing was advanced all the time.
After fixing this the car running great now.

Re: Duchess The Volvo 340 CVT
Evening all, bit more work done.
Upon reassembling the engine noticed the little brass fitting to the carb was leaking fuel, so with some guidance, removed the pipe and chamfered the hole edge, applied some araldite around the brass and pressed it in and then added some into the chamfer.
20180218_162322 by Benjamin Charlton, on Flickr
nexted moved on to the window trim that the paint peeled off, so as a test piece etched primed and then painted black, going to see how this comes out before doing the rest of the frames, but the drivers front door, passenger rear door and the windscreen trim all needed touched up.

more to come.

Re: Duchess The Volvo 340 CVT
Good day, all.
After all the work she has had a good wash and a clean she was ready for her first proper outing, we went to north Cornwall for the weekend.
Ready to go

Here she is in north Cornwall after a flawless 70 miles.
20180309_184059 by Benjamin Charlton, on Flickr
I have a new genuine downpipe for her as hers is leaking slightly, cleaned it back and repainted it.

At the moment she is back with the painter to get the bodywork finished off from any little nicks from reassembly.
few little bits left to do, just little bits left.

Re: Duchess The Volvo 340 CVT
Hello all.
As you are all aware the electric window motors can seize up and stop working, the pair I have are either noisy or slow. I managed to get hold of a second pair, one of which was seized up.
So with nothing to lose, I popped off the covers and started to dismantle them, took the motors apart and removed the spindle from the gear housing.
In my case, one of the bushes was pressed back into the plastic and the gear had seized up (the other one which had already been opened up was working but slowly). So after cleaning and lubricating the gears, all moved freely and the motors both spun nicely.
I decided that i could do a better job than using gaffer tape to secure the backplate.
First I drilled the plugs.
20180407_124927 by Benjamin Charlton, on Flickr
Then tapped the holes using a 3mm tap.
20180407_125610 by Benjamin Charlton, on Flickr
Then ordered some small bolts to match.
20180407_130026 by Benjamin Charlton, on Flickr
Now the gear housing needs fresh greese and a way to seal up the back plate (probably silicon)
20180407_124932 by Benjamin Charlton, on Flickr.
While all this was ongoing, Duchess was back up at the painter's getting all the finishing touches done, also had the rear window replaced because her one the heating element had burnt out and also her glass did not have the 3rd brake light option, now she does.
New rear wiper motor installed hers broke the other day
20180408_123329 by Benjamin Charlton, on Flickr
scarcely drilled the hole for the 3rd brake light wires, making sure all the filings were removed and hole painted up.
20180408_123338 by Benjamin Charlton, on Flickr
Managed to get the wire for the 3rd brake light through the boot lid
20180408_123346 by Benjamin Charlton, on Flickr
Refitted the 3rd brake light (not wired to the other brake light yet
20180408_143248 by Benjamin Charlton, on Flickr
few more bits and loose ends to tiffy up, but she is nearly there.

Re: Duchess The Volvo 340 CVT
Hello all,
just a quick update on the window motors.
With a small bit of sealant around the motor join and the gear housing back.
Awaiting for the sealant to dry but now have a pair of fully working window motors

Looks really good!
Are you going to leave the rub strips off? I used to definitely prefer it without them but I'm undecided now.

Not so sure on the chrome gutter trim when the rest of the car has black trim but it's looking good. I reckon it needs some 360 style thicker side trims to match up with the bumper inserts.

Most of my chrome was faded and crap, so decided to just leave a little chrome around, bumper a gutters and door handlesSteveP wrote:Not so sure on the chrome gutter trim when the rest of the car has black trim but it's looking good. Hi Ben.
Class one. What about some chunky side trim.
Cheers Mark.
