360 rear silencer
360 rear silencer
The rear silencer on my 360 is a crap design IMHO. If you didnt know, the inlet and outlet of the silencer are both at the engine end, meaning that the outlet then bends itself back round the silencer and out of the back of the car. Does anyone know if someone makes a more conventional silencer for it?
I'm pretty sure the 1.4/1.7 models dont have this design, but i would assume the exhausts are a smaller diameter than the 2.0, so i cant just use a silencer from them. Can anyone confirm this?
Cheers
Carl

I have fitted generic silencer.
I cut old silencer out with metal saw and then welded with mig new one to replace it, I used old exhaust pipe part that goes over rear axle. Then I build also new attachment to rear part.
Silencer I used was bit short so I welded also little more pipe to it.
New silencer is freeflow type so engine is now more responsive too

Re: 360 rear silencer
Right, they don't have this design, we had a topic about that in the past, with a picture:Carl wrote:I'm pretty sure the 1.4/1.7 models dont have this design, but i would assume the exhausts are a smaller diameter than the 2.0, so i cant just use a silencer from them. Can anyone confirm this?
A question always in my mind: WHY this design??
If you want I can compare my old 360 GLT exhaust with the one on my 340 DL and give an answer about the diameter.

IF I remember correctly (It's been a while!!) the B19 exhausts do not have that silly arrangement, maybe you could try one of them?
Terms and conditions apply. This post may go down as well as up. Regulated by the Financial Services Authority. Hard hats to be worn. No reversing without a banksman. No admittance to unauthorized persons. Stop that. Put that down. Leave that alone.
I have got an answer from elsewhere that the Renault engines had smaller bore pipes as i expected. But the B19 exhuast is of a more normal desgin so i think i will look at getting one of these and giving it a try.
Then a set of Mintex M1144 pads, a fluid change to dot 5.1, and a few othe rminor fixes (head gasket, cambelt that sort of thing ) and my first road rally in the beast is the middle of semptember.

It's very easy, you can use the 360 GLT exhaust that was installed from 1982 to 1984 (used for the B19). It's also the same exhaust for the 345 / 360 GL, GLS with carb.

Stock rear silencer is kinda crap. So upgrading the exhaust system should be started by replacing the rear silencer. In GLT I have about 3" downpipe (not sure, could be a bit more than that) and 2.5" exhaust pipe with generic silencers. GL has 2.5" piping all the way and also generic silencers.

Yeah. http://koti.mbnet.fi/mtn/images/autot/GLT Some bad pics. Even though it is a injection engine, GL is still surprisingly faster. GLT though "leaks" a bit between the exhaust manifold and turbo so it makes little power-loss. I got new seals waiting, but haven't had them installed yet.jtbo wrote:

It is not original, that blue color is the original color.5lab wrote:is that 2tone paint job on the gl origional? i never seen it on a 340

The B200E Exhaust is definately not as good as the B19E, they were both the same diameter of 2" (on mine anyway) but the B19 setup was better performing and sounding, more so on mine since the rear muffler was scrapped in favor of a resonator (aka 'hotdog'), it was a nice combination, although the front muffler was off a V8 holden (probably the prior owners attempt to save a few $$$) but all up the setup worked well and i'm going to change my b200's exhaust to a similar setup when i get round to it, but with a 2.5" rather than 2" diameter

I think you're looking at this from the wrong angle. The designers obviously made it that way on purpose....so WHY?!
My theory is that its there to a) provide greater pipe length, and b) increase backpressure, thereby increasing low RPM torque. So if you want better flow at high RPM, swapping to a 'straight flow' rear box MIGHT be an upgrade.
Having said that, I don't design exhaust systems for car (and I bet none of you guys do either ), so I'm gonna leave well alone....until I fit the turbo motor, then I'm taking it to someone who knows what they're doing with exhausts...and I don't mean Powerflow!!
cheers
