For Sale 1986 340 Gl 1.7 5dr 37k miles, £150(pics included)

Post by V6 Man » 26 Oct 2005 08:40 pm

Basically as it says, a 1986 345 GL 1.7 with 37,000 miles in decent order.

Two rust spots on rear drivers side door, one on drivers door, lacquer peeling under rear spoiler.

It's got an MOT (3months I think), recently had its prop replaced and the tax ran out at the end of Sept.

It used to belong to a sadly deceased old boy who kept it garaged and took it out on rare occasions. His widow sold it to a contact of mine (Volvo breaker) who is now selling it.
It is located in Ripley, Derbyshire.

Pics taken with a camera phone....

Bet it wont look as clean as sausage.

From what ive seen 340s come in two categories. Look clean and in good condition, but rotten underneath, or crusty, abused dull and dented, but solid as a rock. Unless of course you have a rare one thats mint on the outside AND underneath!

Wonder which one this is? lol There will be plenty of bits and pieces to keep it on the road sould I buy her though, thanks Gavin!

Another point,

Is it just me, or do some really immaculate 340s end up in scrapyards just because nobody wants them? Ive seen two recently driven into my local breakers yard. The one I thought was a customers car as it was in such good condition. They were there for a week or so, then flattened! There were also a couple of redlines in there. The yards Mc Guinesses in Tunstall, Stoke if anyones interested. Very cheap!

Whos that handsome chap in the 940?

I'm not getting it.

Mechanically and structurally it looks fine, the rust is superficial, but the photos are quite flattering.
the tailgate is VERY faded, no laquer on the top at all :(

other things of note, it is/was a smokers car, and does smell a little because of this and the upholstery has some little holes in it.

I didn't get it because it didn't feel right, but that not withstanding, it's relatively cheap, wouldn't take too long to put right, and theoretically could run for another 10 years!

My mates a valeter, ill just get his to steam clean the interiors tits off.

Ive already given the rear seats and door cards away to a neighbour :( Still got the front seats though!

Id better get over there to have a look ASAP, or it will end up flat like the others.

Are there any holes, i.e sills arches front valance e.t.c? Any bodywork you can see that would prevent an MOT?

What colour is it anyway? metallic silver? Does it run ok? any nasty exhasut blows?

Hope its got 4 bald tyres!

Are you at uni in Stoke, Martin? Not too far from Derby, y'know...I might have to call in! Let me know if you wanna grab a train to Derby for a lift to the meet...I might travel from Derby rather than Devon.

cheers

yeah, most of it is metallic silver, sounds fine but i didn't move it (no tax, not insured and stuff) revs evenly and started instantly, steve said he'd only fired it up in the AM to move it forward on the drive.

There where no obvious MOT failure points. 37k is probably genuine miles, the last MOT was at 35k, and that's congruent with an old boy (who incidentaly is NOT dead, Rupert!). it's got a new exaust and a new prop last MOT failed on a loose hose and a bulb IIRC.

to be honest it was in good nick, but i was hoping for something a little more special, I'm loooking for a real bargain minter before my MOT and tax run out!
Steve's a volvo guy and very unlikely to scrap it, he said he may get it taxed and use it as a town runner cos his 760 (960?) is too uneconomical for that these days!

the big let down is the tailgate, which is where i started switching off from it. But there are a copule of minor things like the rear bumper chrome is coming away, front colour coded, rear not... which was odd, the seat holes and patched up center console( don't remember seeing heated seats... could be wrong there though)

it's a good buy at £150, with a few days graft and a good day a the breakers it could look cracking!
nevermind, i'll keep my eyes open!

tyres looked legal

edit: if your near it's worth checking out, even on the off chance

Humm
For £150 I was really hoping for a 360 GLT with 15k on the clock, FSH, immaculate body, leather interior and dazzling metallic black paint work.

Oh well cant win them all!
