But I think the stock setup is very limited, and you're very limited with what you can do with it assuming it's all in good shape. Any info on your old vented setup would be very handy - pics, part numbers, manufacturers, sizes etc etc.
Really appriciate that mate, cheers. The only pics I have are these

Right... been on a little hunt, as I can't find the flippen post.... so, here is a list, which one day may hold something important that I have no idea of currently, and won't be able to find at the time (it's late ok)

Black Diamond:

Part No. Car F/R Disc Type Surface Dia Depth Width
KBD044-CD-F 2.0 '82-'90 Front Solid Cross-Drilled 239 12.7 11.7
KBD044-COM-F 2.0 '82-'90 Front Solid Grooved/Drilled 239 12.7 11.7
KBD044-G12-F 2.0 '82-'90 Front Solid Grooved 239 12.7 11.7

EBC:

Part No. Car F / R Type Holes
D100 2.0 '82-'89 Front Standard / Solid 4

Tar.Ox:

Part No. Car Front/Rear Dimensions
G88-1972F All Sep '79-'91 Front 239 x 13 x 29 Grooved --Doesn't say if vented or not
SJ-1972F All Sep '79-'91 Front 239 x 13 x 29 Grooved/Drilled --Again, no mention of type

Right, thats just annoying, I'm sure that the site I was on (ali mentioned it a month or so ago... needforspeed.co.uk I think) had venteds on it :(

Only possibles are those TarOx one, and I think they are solid too... the hunt continues.

Those discs look remarkably similar to the 400 ones have have sat next to me. Of course, all discs look pretty much the same, but you never know.

Although, assuming '29' on the Tarox discs is the width, that would suggest to me they are vented. Although it could be the width of the whole disc, which would be about right for a solid one.
You dont mean they're stock 300 calipers though, do you? Because they'd never fit the vented disc and pads in them. Definately still a Girling caliper though. I might start doing some more digging.

Cheers for the pics, they're a good start!

The Haynes thing might possibly hold a secret here....

It basically says that the later heatshields (86 on) had cooling slots in them, and the discs were modified. It also says you mustn't use the late discs with early heatshields and steel wheels. It suggests upgrading to later discs and guards...and by implication alloys - which you've already done :)

If your car had a) steels, b) early (solid) heatshields, but c) late discs, that might explain it. Of course, it could just be that the brakes are a bit shite...

cheers

The early 300 brake set was very different.

They used the same pads as the 66 ( I know cos I have loads of them)

The discs were smaller etc

The vents would have been put in to help cooling.

hello Dai,

just saw your comment re 66s. ive got a 66 but theres a prob with the brakes. The pedal goes to the floor before the brake work. i need to check if theres an obvious leak in the rear wheel cylinders but dya know how difficult /easy it is to get master cylinders for 66s? are they the same as the early 340s?

I know the brakes on the early 340s are different... they later changed the wheels and added larger calipers ( floating calipers ) as the early cars were too prone to brake fade....

thanks

Shimon

Carl: took measurement between the U bit in the caliper, and it was the same on both Beast (the GLT with venteds) and Fake (my 1.7). I had as much a comparison as I could (i.e. did anything look externally different) and to my eyes they were the same!

Surprising the amount I've learnt in that last 2 months since I scrapped it that would have been useful info, always the way I guess.
