my guess (according to what I have read here before, and judging by the size of the compartment) is that it should be 2 to 3 litres maximum. the figures in the book that add up to over 5 litres seem incorrect.
on the old topic on V3C that guy Marwin also talked about 1.9 ltr.

second gear problem

Post by mgarageu »

common problem of 300-series. because of the "long" clutch shaft syncro works in difficult conditions, especially when changing from first to second too fast! any oil cannot solve that worn item in the gearbox. i am using old type of changing from 1st to 2nd - as everybody used to do it on non-syncronized gearboxes. you can try this on yours! :)

would it be easy to replace the worn bits or simply stick another gearbox in?

Yeah, my 2nd is a bit of a problem when she's cold. A slow change, and sometims double clutching, (letting the clutch up and pressing it down again when you're in neutral) seems to help. :)

A fairly common problem - try adjusting the reverse gate over to the left slightly, as this solved the problem on my last few 300's.

To gain access, undo the 2 screw in front of the gear lever & remove bag. This then exposes the reverse gate (this is why you lift the collar on the stick to clear this) which is held by 2 screws. Slightly slacken these & move it say 1/2 mill over to the left - this then gives more slack on the gate.

Before you do the above, waggle the stick from side to side in first & then second. You should find that there's a lot less play in second which is the problem !!

Cheers,

John.
Current : No 300's anymore !

Thumbs up for John's suggestion. I just adjusted my switch, as my lights weren't coming on at all (opposite problem!), but it's a fine line between having the lights on reliably, and 1st, 2nd, or both being hard to engage.

If that doesn't work, look to the mechanical solution. Much easier to swap complete boxes.

cheers

Could it be the clutch? If that doesn't release properly the second and third gear are also hard to engage.
Leather, leccy windows and mirrors, snowcap, foglights, open air filter, black roof upholstery. What more do you want? >a 2.3 turbo!

3rd 4th and the excuse for 5th engage fine and are very light. 1st is slightly tougher and 2nd is a lot tougher. i'll give the gate a move and see what happens else how much show a 116k scrap yard gearbox set me back?

I think 'drivesavolvo' was offering one for £50, but I think you could do better than that if you got lucky.

I'd say it'll have to have had a hard life to be knackered at 130k.

cheers
