Exterior door handle snap off

Post by deleted » 28 Dec 2005 02:52 am

Anyones door handles ever snap off these car.

Mine snapped off about 4 months ago, ive been to the wreckers and half of theres have snapped off too!!
This makes getting into my car a bit of a pain. It is the driverside doorhandle that has snapped off.

Does anyone know whats involved in replacing this, i think i have a good idea, but im unsure whether i can keep my 'lock' and place that on the new door handle i salvage etc.

Ill grab some pics so you know what i mean.

P:)

Yeh they break off in extreme case, usually the springs snap so the handle just flaps about like mine did!!
TBH they are a real PITA to swap as they are really awkward more tan anything else. Espaecially if you want to swap the lock barrel over. I would recoomend getting one from a scrap car and looking to how it comes out!!
So if you get one from a scrap car dont try and fit it within an hour try it firat thing in a morning so you can have a good few hours on it if needs be.

Happened on Affie. I got round that one quite easily - I scrapped the car and bought a new one.

 Erm, ok, the snapped handle wasn't the real reason that the car was scrapped. I wouldn't recommend that remedy to anyone else...

I had this on my old car. Used super glue and an activator to repair. With care it would last a month before needing to be reglued.

The black plastic surround on mine seems to pull a few mm away from the body if the key catches in the lock, which is a bit worrying...

The 200's do the same.
I thing I have a spare one about. I'll need to look.
You may be best getting one from a srapper so you can find out how to get it off with no damage.

Yes, this is a fault that I'm amazed no-one has mentioned before. We had a brand new one fail @ 14 months old. I think the car has probably had 5 replacements in the time we've had it. Wierdly, my current one has been on the car for years now, so I think Dad must have been rough on the handles for some reason.

Funny you mention that Dai, I've only just done one on a 240!

cheers

you could always convert the car to left hand drive which will reduce the wear on the offside door handle  !!! ( I'll get my coat )

On a 240 you replace the front ones with rear ones as they have had less use. Would mean no locks on a 3 though :(

Even though I've had one snap; the feel of a nice firm metal handle is much nicer than plastic used on most other cars.

If you wanna be really trick convert the car to remote locking and use rear handles they are easily modified!!! As i have a delocked passenger door and as i have remote locking i could delock drivers door, but havent purely because if the remotes die i cant get in!!!!

Yeah a metal handle is nice, but I kept getting static shocks back in the summer, and a bit of plastic may have been better ;)

finally here is a pic

Image

the last 4 months ive been opening the door by using a key under the last remaining bit on the left and levering it up.

gotten quite good at it :)

At first it cracked on the right hand side, i kept using it for a month or two, gradually it got worse, untill it snapped off the left too.
