360 timing

Post by bogbasic »

Hello, I have checked the timing on my 360 with a timing light and it is 10 degrees. The Haynes manual says that for a Renix 360, it should be 15 degrees. Any clues much appreciated e.g. how important is it and could someone have swapped the Renix with one from a 340??

Might that data refer to a leaded fuel version? IIRC they had to retard the timing for unleaded. Just a thought!

cheers

....but, how can you alter the timing on a renix system??

Very little. Either move the sensor, or become an electronics genius and reprogram the unit.

How much that sensor moving did help, was it around 3 degrees?

No idea at all. I don't know personally of anyone that's done it.

cheers

Moving the sensor is a new one to me.

I was wondering how Volvo garages would have done it since I remember they were offering to adapt cars to unleaded when 4 star was phased out in about 2000.

CPS sensor hole are just modified so that you make round hole to kind of open from one side, so then you have little play sideways when mounting sensor.

I have seen pics of this in this forum, also pics of more advanced mod that gives even bit more adjustment, I guess it was near 6 degrees, but I just can't find those pics. It was quite long time ago, definetly before pages wen't down, but can't remember if it was summer or spring or previous year :(

Anyway more advanced mod did recuire to buidling more surface to sensor and if I don't remember wrong it was bit angled in furthest position.

One way to get more play is to install new distributor with hall sensor and then install aftermarket ignition ;)

AFAIK the Volvo modification involved grounding a pin on the Renix unit (but only on certain models), and installing a second HG to lower the compression.

The trick with the sensor involved elongating the bolt holes on the mounting bracket so it could be moved.
