Whats silver, and shiney, and bent at all funny angles?
Thanks again Andy for coming over yesterday, shame it didn't work, but it did get me home, which was the main concern! Now I just need a new car/engine
Andy also hopefully has some pictures from the piston and head... which are slightly less shiney than before.

Bugger, this sucks! Although speaking to you on MSN you seem to be having dirty thoughts involving a 480 Turbo Maybe in the future she can be renamed to 'Fast Kar'
As an aside...

Ouch! I'm not even gonna ask how that happened!
This is what happened to my no.3 exhaust valve when my cambelt snapped last september:
...but you win on bent bits of engine. For a spark plug to get itself mullered? Something definately aint where it should be. I feel for you dude, hope you get back on the road soon...

That looks like detonation problem. http://www.pukema.com/kuvat/naku.jpg There's a piston which has suffered detonation and your piston looks a lot same.

My money is on a foreign object looking at the damage pattern, but that doesn't immediately explain the knocking sounds...which tie in more with a bent rod, one of the likely symptoms of severe pinging.
What doesn't make sense is how detonation that severe could happen on just one pot on a single carb engine.
if the saprk plug wasnt working you'll get detonation eventuallly
its basically when the explosion is caused before the spark plug has lit up, often during the compression stroke, and means that theres a mass of pressure at the wrong time which cant escape
Here's a pic of all of those pistons from Pukema's B19. First piston had suffered detonation as can be seen. No foreign objects in the engine. Though I'm not sure if those were pistons from B19ET so it might have been a turbo engine.
Those marks on your cylinder head look also a lot like they would have caused by detonation because sharp edges in combustion chamber will increase detonation risk and both marks are on sharp edges.
Well. I don't know. It could have been a foreign object too..
