Variomatic Pipework

Post by petefarrell360 »

Ok, a Variomatic question for the few who have this quirky transmission or know about it! It is Mk3 related really. [/West Country Jethro Voice] What happened was......[/West Country Jethro Voice] I removed some of the pipework and connectors to take with me to the Nessy fixing weekend along with some other parts from my 1989 Variomatic. I thought I'd take some pictures too, just so I was 100 % sure where things went back to, but you guessed it, time passed, I've forgotten exactly what went where, and the one picture I could have done with I didn't take! So, the manuals I have are about as much use as the proverbial one legged man in the backside kicking contest, they're just not detailed enough about the Variomatic system, and often use pictures of earlier parts in the descriptions, which is useful, why can't they show both!?

So.........what I need to know is where the other end of the pipe behind the one removed goes to, is it the carb base, or the air filter? The problem being I remember it was a real PITA to remove the pipe to the carb base, which makes me think it is this one, as it is more rubberised, and grips to it, and would provide the vacuum feed for the vario servo stuff, but the other pipe won't really reach the air filter too easily. The one removed in the pic, the other end goes to a t piece, and one end goes off to the breather on the rocker cover, which makes me think this should not be in the vacuum pipe, and should go to the air filter, but it jsut doesn't seem to reach!

Cheers.

Pete

LOL, tis not Nessy's fault, is mine, I wish I'd had more time to properly note what I pulled from where, always seems obvious when removing, but come to putting it back together and doubt creeps in.

Lol, OK, so maybe a photo from Kar won't help, there seems to be a lot of extra plumbing there!!! I'll go and take some anyway, and put them up as it may be of some use, but hopefully a Vario person can do the same.

'Antiekeradio' is the variomatic guru, he can probably give you an answer. But he's on holiday i guess.

I've got some photos for you Pete, I'll put them up later, although there is definately a lot less pipework going on!

Cheers chaps, didn't get time today, what with the snow, work etc, so I can wait, there's no real pressure yet. But it'd be nice to get it back together, running, then move it from where it's been boxed in by Amazons, the MOT might become a reality then!

wasn't on holiday, just missed the topic.
(phpBB resets 'new message' icons even if you dont actually visit the messages...)

have been busy on the V3C site because it had to be transferred to a new web host. (we have 2GB now :-) )

the answer to you question is simple; the thin hose from the side on the EMVK wich has only 1 connection, goes to the air filter.

the small connection under the carb base is used for the positive crankcase ventilation (small hose from valve cover, this one needs to have a 'restriction' to prevent the full intake vacuum from reaching the crankcase)

Thanks Wouter! Top man, that confirms my thoughts, as the short length of pipe didn't reach the air filter base too easily. Wanted to make 100 % sure though.

I find that annoying, as sometimes if I have only a couple of minutes to spare, and I want to check V3M, I know I'll then miss posts if there are quite a few, so I often save the visit until I know I can read all of the new posts in one visit.

Anyway, thanks again, might even have some time at the end of the week to see if we can get it booked in for an MOT all being well.

Glad you've got that sorted :)

The message reset is annoying, but I think it's teh same with all forums. The worst bit is when you're away for a long time, like before Christmas when I had a load of work and was, ill, so you wait till you have more time, then you know it'll take longer. If I have to do that, I'll clear one or two of the forum sections, then open the others before coming off the internet, then instead of switching the computer off I hibernate it, and when I switch it on, the web browsers still open, and the posts are still marked as read/unread (untill you refresh ;)

yes its true, ALL phpBB boards do that :(

(one of the few downsides to it!)

for V3C I am looking for some new board software as well....
If there are enough funds available, we might go for vBulletin.
thats great boardware, but quite expensive (at least not for free like phpBB)

Greetings Wouter

Well another forum I frequently frequent uses Invision Power Board(Trial) v2.0.0 © 2006 IPS, Inc and it's just the same.

yep, I know IPB as well. that is great boardware too! (honestly, it is MUCH better than phpBB) [edit --> and terribly expensive....]

however; they do not offer a convertor with wich I could transfer our current users and posts to the new program. we would have to start over again.... *thats a big no!*

vBulletin does have a convertor which seems to work quite well.

they seem to be the only one around.. there is nothing useful for phpBB as well...

This might be worht a read through http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.ph ... light=read

Although it would have to be passed by Aymat for stability, can't have the forum down again!
