Those who dare drive a Volvo. Update

Post by andyconnell » 08 Dec 2005 03:52 am

Hi Guys

Just finished prepping the shell for the paint shop, and man!!! how heavy is all that sound deadening mat.

We have taken it all out, junked the tank.

The 440 turbo motor is in, had the plenum modified last week, just need to get the manifold sorted and a cossie blower.

Want to fit perspex windows and gut the doors, they way a ton, but not to sure on race/road regs yet. I will use it for drifting about from place to place as you do and will need an mot.

Will be seeing Nev soon (ducatievos bro) to get the suspension sorted and diff welded up.

Need a slogan!!! Nevs the daddy and has come with the pimp badge, need and alternative ..... any ideas?

Thought of these for the alley petrol tank in the back:

Built in Sweden, driven properly in Britian.

This one was built in Britian.

Need a break upgrade and disk rear conversion next.

Oh and of course a set of minilites or revolutions.

Will keep you updated.

Have chopped the manifold and waiting delivery of new turbo (cossie).

Plenum has been modified.

Found yellow injectors.

Nevs is doing th five link and welding the diff.

Hi andy, what ecu are you running, I am using a 500 on mine, if you are using the same, then I should be able to give you a pretty good base map, What turbo are you using? and what are the injectors from? Let me know the details an I will sort it out for you :D

Am running an omex 500 with std yellow cossie injectors.

I need an engine loom and sensors as the ecu i am going to use for the time being is off my other car. I will get a new one when i have the spare cash.

I hope to have the whole car caged, painted and running by the end of Jan and any help would be greatly recived.

The turbo i have is off of a 2wd cossie. Is this ok?

The exhaust is custom and exits out of the near side rear wing side pipe style.

Because the car is so low this looks excellent.

Need a fuel pump. (extrnal of tank)

Need wheels!!! anyone know of any cheap alloys going ie: 6 or 7 x 13 minilites or bbs etc that have a nice offset near ET Zero.

Have taken out the glass now and have sourced some perspex windows.

have re-shapd my plenum and manifold like Huskys so the turbo and throttle body fits, but how come you used a vauxhall one?

Intrcooler is at the front custom style.

I havnt modified the engine as i dont know how long it will last drifting, guess time will tell.

Would love to put a cossie motor in it or the 5.7litre BMW V12 i have in the workshop, how cool would that be.

I have hung it over with a winch and it would go...he he..

Speak to you all soon.

You could fit a YB, but a very similar engine is already available from Volvo, so why not keep it in the family? Ah yes, the fact that it costs loads more to make it make good power...

A guy in the states took an almost stock 2.3 16v, bolted on a big(ish...not huge) turbo, tuned it nicely, and got 350bhp at 15psi. Not too hard :)

cheers

intresting

Post by andyconnell » 20 Dec 2005 02:35 pm

An interesting train of thought, which i gave much consideration and still have some questions about, so i will ask you:

I have acsess to 4 2.3 turbo motors plus others inc a 2.7 i think and some straight 6 24 valve ones at my local breakers.

Sorry the e on my key board has gone funny...

The problem i have; is i bought 4 340s all with 1.7 Renault motors in. The volvo motor isnt going to fit a Renault drive train or is it?

Do you know of anyone i can talk to that has tuned one of the big volvo motors sucsesfully?

I fancy getting one anyway as they are so cheap..

speak soon...

This is the 'feature' thread on the 350bhp 16v turbo 740...
http://forums.turbobricks.com/showthread.php?t=42872

I'll not feed you BS, the "+16v +T" isn't easy (nothing like as easy as a 8v redblock swap, or a Renault 1.7 Turbo swap), but probably a lot easier than showhorning a YB in there, plus you'll be able to pimp a Porche designed head. The 16v swap is now considered the cheapest way into big power from a redblock.

Maybe have a poke around here too...
http://mysite.freeserve.com/360s
Mark bought his 360 with a 2.3 16v engine in it, and is now turbocharging it.

Regarding fitting a Volvo engine to a 340...just get a 360 bellhousing and prop (and gearbox? I'm not too sure what the difference in 340 vs 360 boxes is).

Regarding picking up parts...you're looking for a 2.3 8v turbo bottom end, but preferably not one from a 740, as these are the weaker ones (only good to ~300bhp on an 8v head sm56). Try finding one from a 940 (B230FT). If you're feeling adventurous, pick up a set of 740 turbo (B230ET) pistons, as these are higher compression (9.3:1?). If you're going 16v, you'll need to cut valve reliefs into them anyway, so you might as well machine the 'better' pistons since they've got to come out anyway.

Then you need a 16v head and inlet manifold. I have a head in need of some love that I'd be prepared to sell. You'll need a timing belt tensioner from a Penta marine engine (I can supply), as the automotive 16v block is different to the marine (and 8v car) one (and supposedly not as good). You'll also need a 16v turbo exhaust manifold. The only one Volvo made is a bit rubbish, and probably won't fit in a 300 anyway, so it's custom bodge time.

Hope there are a few useful pointers there anyway...

cheers

Hello people! Andy, P.m. me your adress and I will send you a base map, should be pretty close too as you seem to have a carbon copy of mine! Dont forget you will need ballast resistors for the injectors, as the cssie ones are two ohm not 16, if you use them without, you will smoke the output transistors in the ecu. give omex a ring direct for the sensors and the loom, there not expensive and you will have no problems with calibration then. foggy, how much do you want for that head, your putting ideas into mine!

Long time no see squire :)

Well I'd emphasise that it's in need of some love (surface corrosion in the ports (just an excuse to port the crap out of it though :)), and you'll need to source manifolds)...

Give me the £30 I paid for it and I'll probably say job done...since it's you :D

EDIT: Crikey, those pics look terrible. I've cleaned it up a lot since then!
