Doh, bad luck

A mate put a hole in his petrol tank on his Impreza after going a bit crazy down a non tarmac road. He patched it up with some Chemical Metal (or similar) and that seemed to work ok. Halfords sell it and it says on the back it suitable for repairing petrol tanks, so might be worth a try.

Thanks for the tip. I've heard of something called quick steel - anybody know of it? By the way I spoke to the owners of the car park today and they said this same thing happened to another car a couple of weeks ago.

Steve........ once that fuel is out of the tank, would you be able to get the fuel pump off for me please mate, unless someone else has called dibs on it! But you say you can't get under the car.........

Steve - no idea if this would work but I'd try this: undo the fuel line in the engine bay and stick the end in a jerry can and then find the supply wires for the fuel pump and hook it straight up to a 12v feed.

LOL, good work Foggy, so now it looks dangerously like a GLT now then! Must say from the front at the Nessy fixing weekend at night, it looked very 360 GLTish in the video coming around the corner, but the noise gave it away!

Fuel tank leaks can be safly sealed with apoxy resin. If there is a hole you will need to patch if first before lining the tank.

Well you are the fuel expert Foggy! As an update, car is in garage, hopefully fixable although I havent heard for definite yet, police say it happened to someone else where i park a couple of weeks ago - an old peugeot or something. It was a screwdriver that was used and they stole approx half a tank full. Total gits!

sorry to hear about that, It happened to a couple of people near me about a year ago. The petrol tank comes out very easily, takes about 15 mins, swapping it for a second hand one is safest, but the patch method will work ok, halfords used to sell petro-patch, specificaly for fuel tanks, less than a tenner last time I saw some.

Thanks for the tip. I got the car back today and it has been patched with something that my chap uses on sumps and things - seems sound but you can all have a look on Sunday! Heater is still not working though, He says I need to get a motor and resistor.

put a plate over (under) the tank once patched. that way next time they'll have to use a torch. they'll only do that once.
